Construction of World's Largest Telescope Begins in 2012 (SPACE.com)

The European Southern Observatory's plan to begin construction of the world's largest telescope ? the European Extremely Large Telescope ? will take a big step forward in 2012 now that early funding for the project has been secured.

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) governing body approved the 2012 budget, which paves the way for preparatory work to begin at the planned site of the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) at the Cerro Armazones mountain in the central part of Chile's Atacama Desert.

The telescope, which represents a joint collaboration between 15 countries, will be the world's largest ground-based optical telescope. Builders selected the observatory's location in Chile because of the optimal weather conditions in the area, where skies are clear overhead roughly 320 nights of the year, ESO officials have said.

The E-ELT's primary mirror will be a staggering 138 feet (42 meters) wide. For comparison, the Keck Observatory in Hawaii has a mirror that measures 33 feet (10 meters) wide, and the Subaru telescope, also in Hawaii, has a primary mirror that is 27 feet (8.2 m) wide.

The ESO governing council's approval of the 2012 budget includes funding for some initial work on the E-ELT project, such as the development of access roads to the telescope site and early construction efforts on one of the telescope's five mirrors. This work is expected to begin in early 2012, ESO officials said in a statement. [Stacking Up the 10 Biggest Telescopes on Earth ]

"The E-ELT is starting to become reality," ESO Director General Tim de Zeeuw said in a statement. "However, with a project of this size it is expected that approval of the extra expenditure will take time. Council at the same time recognizes that preparatory work must start now in order for the project to be ready for a full start of construction in 2012."

The ESO governing body is expected to make a final approval decision for the entire E-ELT project in mid-2012.

Plans for the E-ELT have seen steady progress over the past few months, ESO officials said. In October, ESO reached an agreement with the Chilean government that culminated in support for the project and the donation of land for the mega-observatory.

In that same month, an external review confirmed that the E-ELT could feasibly be built within the proposed budget of about $1.43 billion (1.082 billion Euros). Previous reviews also confirmed that the telescope's design is technically sound, ESO officials said.

Several ESO member states are already financially committed to the project, and funding is expected to be agreed upon between all members by mid-2012, which will enable the council to make its approval decision at that time, ESO officials said.

The E-ELT is expected to be operational early in the next decade, they added.

ESO already has three observatories in Chile, including the Paranal Observatory, which houses the Very Large Telescope, and the La Silla Observatory, which hosts the New Technology Telescope.

Eurozone faces tough hurdles early in 2012

(AP) ? After a turbulent 2011, the 17 countries that use the euro will be quickly confronted in the new year with major hurdles to solving their government debt crisis, just as the eurozone economy is expected to sink back into recession.

With government finances under pressure as growth wanes, the eurozone will find it even more difficult to shore up shaky banks and reduce the high borrowing costs that threaten Italy and Spain with financial ruin.

As early as the second full week of January, bond auctions in which Italy and Spain need to borrow big chunks of cash will start showing whether the eurozone is finally getting a grip on the 2-year-old crisis that has seen Greece, Ireland and Portugal bailed out.

If the auctions go well and borrowing costs ease, the crisis will ease, lending support for the EU strategy of getting governments to embark on often-savage austerity measures to reduce deficits, along with massive support for the banking system from the European Central Bank.

High rates, on the other hand, would feed fears of a government debt default that could cripple banks, sink the economy and, in the extreme case, destroy the 17-member currency union.

Key events early in the New Year:

? Italy and Spain will seek to borrow heavily in the first quarter at affordable interest costs, starting the second week in January.

? The slowing eurozone economy may slip into or already be in recession, lowering tax revenue and increasing government budget deficits.

? Bailed-out Greece must agree with creditors on a debt writedown that will cut the value of their holdings by 50 percent in an effort to start putting the bankrupt country back on its feet.

The task is for the major players ? eurozone governments, the European Union's executive Commission and the European Central Bank ? to convince financial markets that troubled governments can pay their heavy debts and therefore deserve to borrow at affordable interest costs.

Default fears have driven up bond market interest rates and made it more and more expensive for indebted governments to borrow to pay off maturing bonds. That vicious cycle forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek bailout loans from the other eurozone governments and the International Monetary Fund.

A key stress point will be whether Italy can continue to raise money in the markets at affordable rates.

In the first quarter, it has to step up its borrowing to pay off euro72 billion ($94 billion) in bond redemptions and interest payments. Spain, which is expected to sell up to euro25 billion ($33 billion) in new debt, starts a heavy period of auctions on Jan. 12, and Italy begins on Jan. 13.

Overall, Italy has more than euro300 billion ($392 billion) in debt maturing in 2012.

"If Italy manages to auction this debt successfully, then the debt crisis will take a step back from the cliff edge," said analyst Jane Foley at Rabobank. "If it doesn't, it could go over the cliff edge. At the end of the day, whatever the nuances and hours of discussion that have gone on about the sovereign debt crisis, it boils down to whether a sovereign can sell its debt in the open market."

If Italy fails to borrow at affordable rates, the options are few and unattractive. The eurozone's euro500 billion ($653 billion) in bailout funds ? already partly committed to earlier bailouts ? would struggle to cover Italy's financing needs, even if additional help can be found from the IMF. A bigger solution ? commonly guaranteed eurobonds ? faces German resistance and would take time to implement.

The European Central Bank could use its power to buy large amounts of Italian and Spanish bonds with newly created money ? but has so far refused, out of concern that a central bank bailout would remove the incentive for governments to control their spending.

Instead, the bank has focused on pushing credit to banks so they can keep lending to support the economy.

Still, its limited bond purchases have provided essential support to Spain and Italy by helping hold down borrowing costs. And its latest massive infusion of euro489 billion ($639 billion) in cheap, long term loans may help troubled governments borrow, as stronger banks may use some of the money to buy higher-yielding government bonds.

Italy pays an average of about 4.2 percent on its existing stock of euro1.9 trillion in debt, but the crisis has pushed bond yields on the country's benchmark ten-year bonds to over 7 percent.

Italy's new government, led by economist Mario Monti, can probably pay rates that high for a while, analysts think. Italy paid much higher interest rates in the 1990s for several years; rates peaked at 14 percent in 1992 but fell gradually to around 4 percent by 1998 as the country shaped up its finances to join the euro at the beginning of 1999.

Italy and Spain's battle will be even harder if the debt troubles pull the whole eurozone into a recession. Economists at Ernst & Young foresee a mild recession in the first part of the year and only 0.1 percent growth for the year as a whole, with unemployment at 10 percent for several years.

That will make it harder for governments to persuade voters to accept more cutbacks in spending, pensions and government wages while raising taxes.

It's not clear how long voters in Greece, which will have its fourth straight year of recession next year, will tolerate continuous austerity. Yet the cutbacks are the price of getting the bailout loans that have kept Greece from default.

Meanwhile Greece is striving to get creditors to agree to write down some debt and avoid larger losses in case of a default that is not agreed ahead of time. A euro14.4 billion ($18.8 billion) chunk of debt comes due in March.

Guntram Wolff, deputy director of the Bruegel think tank in Brussels, said that governments may get past the early hurdles ? only to confront a souring mood among voters in the second half of the year over continuing cutbacks and sacrifices. New governments in Spain and Italy, currently enjoying political honeymoons, will be pressed to show progress. Greece, with a transitional government and elections expected in April, has seen repeated protests and strikes.

"There will be a point in the summer when people have seen a lot of action from government and no improvement in their living conditions and they will ask, do we have this euro to live with austerity and high unemployment," he said.

Wolff thinks that the determination of political elites to keep the euro together will win out: "I think it's going to survive."

Some call for Dec. 29 as Dump Go Daddy day

By Suzanne Choney

Go Daddy is the target of some angry users who want to penalize the Web hosting giant and Internet domain registrar for its support of a controversial online piracy bill, despite Go Daddy recently retracting it after losing more than 37,000 Web domains in just the last several days, according to reports.

"There's a strange irony to the sudden, seemingly grassroots campaign against Go Daddy," writes Joe Wilcox of BetaNews, which says the "mass call for a Go Daddy boycott ... has taken on mass peer-pressure hysteria ? that by association you are somehow evil if you don't transfer domains from Go Daddy":

Stated differently, Go Daddy protesters block peoples' right to choose, too, by pressuring them to leave the registrar. They're guilty now of what they accuse the government would do in the future ? suppressing freedom on the Internet.

The Go Daddy boycott and "dump day" were organized by users of social news site? Reddit, who also set up a boycott site:

Since the announcement of the boycott of Go Daddy, Go Daddy has just publicly dropped their support of the heinous Stop Online Piracy Act or SOPA. But, they still support the Senate version of SOPA, called PIPA or PROTECT-IP. If you work on the internet and do business with Go Daddy you're supporting a company who is actively working against your best interests.

Hollywood studios and record companies favor the Stop Online Piracy Act as much as many major technology companies ? including Google, Facebook, Apple, Intel and Microsoft ? oppose it. The bill makes the streaming of unauthorized content a felony. But it also would require websites and telecom service providers to monitor content and traffic across their networks for piracy, and let law enforcement actually seize a website and shut it down.

Last week, the House Judiciary Committee said it would delay debate on the bill, H.R. 3261, until early next year.

Go Daddy's CEO, Warren Adelman, in a Dec. 23 press release, said the company is pulling its support for SOPA, and that while fighting online piracy is of "the utmost importance .. we can clearly do better. It's very important that all Internet stakeholders work together on this. Getting it right is worth the wait. Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it."

Despite that diplomatic tone, Go Daddy's Christine Jones made it quite clear in the same press release that the company "has always fought to preserve the intellectual property rights of third parties, and will continue to do so in the future."

Google-Branded Tablet Design: 10 Features It Must Have

Google-Branded Tablet Design: 10 Features It Must Have
( Page 1 of 2 )

Tablets are all the rage today. Consumers around the globe are flocking to stores to buy products like the Apple iPad or the Amazon Kindle Fire, and countless companies, seeing that trend, are trying to break into that market. From big companies to small, just about every tablet maker hopes that it can deliver a product that consumers and even enterprise users would be happy to use.

Surprisingly, though, Google is one of the few major companies that hasn?t tried to enter the tablet market with a product of its own. In fact, the search giant has been content to simply offer table manufacturers the Android mobile operating system and then sit back to see if anybody can really make a go of it.

However, in a recent interview, Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt mistakenly let it slip that the search company was planning to launch a tablet in the next six months. Now pundits are speculating what will the device offer?

Read on to find out what we?d like to see in a Google-branded tablet:

1. An Android version that?s ready for primetime

One of the biggest mistakes Google made this year was to make Android 3.0 ?Honeycomb? available to its vendor partners before it was ready. When the Motorola Xoom launched, the device fell short immediately because of its poor Android installation. In the Google-branded tablet the search giant must offer an ideal software experience. If it doesn?t, it?ll be in for trouble.

2. End-to-end Google development

Google has in the past used its own corporate branding on smartphones. However, those devices were designed by third-party vendors. If Google is indeed, working on a tablet the company should control all facets of its development. Firms that control the hardware and the software are typically more successful. Just ask Apple.

3. Multiple screen sizes

Although earlier in the year, it seemed that consumers really only wanted tablets with big displays, like the 9.7-inch flavor in Apple?s iPad, the Kindle Fire has thrown that idea on its head. Now, it appears customers are just fine with 7-inch tablets. If Google wants to see its tablet become a success, it should offer multiple screen sizes, including 7- and 10.1-inch offerings.

4. Multiple price points

Along with multiple sizes, it?s important for Google to remember that different consumers want different features and they want them all at varying prices. Therefore, Google would be smart to offer its tablet versions at different prices. A cheap model could go for, say, $199, while a top-of-the-line option could retail for $799. The move could maximize the tablet?s market appeal.

Investors Can Still Find Value In Energy Sector

View of the assembly of the oil drill

It?s not too late to find value in the energy services sector. Parker Drilling Company (PKD) continues to be a value stock even as shares hit new multi-year highs. This Zacks #1 Rank (strong buy) is now trading with a forward P/E of 14.2, up from 11.9 in mid-November.

Parker Drilling provides contract drilling solutions, rental tools and project management to the energy industry. It has 25 land rigs and 2 offshore barge rigs in its international fleet. Its U.S. fleet consists of 13 barge rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.?The company?s rental tool segment supplies equipment to operators on land and offshore in the U.S. and some international markets.

Parker Surprised in third quarter by 38%

On November 3, Parker reported its third quarter results and surprised on the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 5 cents. Earnings per share were 18 cents compared with the consensus of just 13 cents. PKD only broke even in the year ago quarter.?Revenue rose to $176.6 million from $172 million a year ago. The quarter was boosted, again, by big growth in the rental tools segment. Sales rose 30% to $62.4 million from $48.1 million a year ago.

Demand for drill pipe and related products, especially from operators drilling in the shale plays, continued to expand.?The level of international and deepwater Gulf of Mexico placements also increased in the quarter. U.S. drilling revenue rose 94% to $28.9 million from $14.9 million a year ago.

For the quarter, Parker had an average of 10.7 barge rigs employed compared to about 7.6 barge rigs which were employed in the third quarter of 2010.

Zacks Consensus Estimates Rise

The estimate picture for Parker looks good. As you can see from the price and consensus chart below, estimates fell off a cliff, along with the stock price, during the Great Recession in 2008/2009.

But the earnings have turned it around and now the chart is very bullish, showing the 2012 consensus estimate again rising another 45% after an expected 550% earnings growth in 2011.?That is a huge turnaround from 2010 when the company made just 8 cents for the entire year.

Pop artist James Rizzi dies at 61 (AP)

BERLIN ? James Rizzi, a New York-born and based pop artist best known for his playful and childlike three-dimensional sculptures, has died. He was 61.

Rizzi's managers, Art 28 GmbH & Co. KG, based in Stuttgart, Germany, said in a statement on its website that the artist died peacefully at his studio in New York's SoHo district on Monday. They gave no cause of death.

Rizzi was born in Brooklyn and studied art at the University of Florida. He returned to New York in 1974 and first made his name as a street artist.

He became known for his bright, cartoon-like drawings and 3-D constructions. In 1996 Lufthansa commissioned him to decorate a jet with pastel stars, birds and travelers.

Nexon slips after Tokyo IPO, may sting Zynga debut (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Online gaming firm Nexon Co slipped on its trading debut on Wednesday following a $1.2 billion IPO, Japan's biggest this year, and may signal a bumpy ride for U.S.-based rival Zynga, which debuts on Nasdaq later this week.

Zynga, which has developed the popular "FarmVille" and "Mafia Wars" games on Facebook, is now seeking a lower valuation than a few months ago because of weak financial markets and the weaker-than-expected performance of some recent Internet IPOs now trading below their IPO prices such as Pandora Media.

At least one analyst said Zynga, which is due to price its offering on Thursday, may see demand for its shares dampened by Nexon's lukewarm stock market debut.

"I do think the initial performance of Nexon shares in Japan will give investors a pause with respect to Zynga," said Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia, who put an "underperform" rating on Zynga shares on Tuesday.

A spokesman for Zynga declined to comment on Zynga's IPO on Wednesday.

Nexon, founded in South Korea almost two decades ago, offers PC-based games for free, while charging users small fees for in-game virtual items such as clothing for avatars -- a so-called freemium model that analysts see as relatively recession-proof.

The global games industry has shrugged off the economic slowdown and should top $81 billion by 2016, according to research firm DFC Intelligence, up 23 percent from this year and more than three times the size of the recorded music industry.

Nexon, which sold more than 70 million shares, closed at 1,270 yen, below its IPO price of 1,300 yen. The broader market lost 0.4 percent, and local rivals Gree and DeNA fell 2.7 percent and 4.3 percent, respectively.

"Part of the problem is that they priced it at fair value, so it wasn't going to come on at a huge premium," said David Gibson, an analyst at Macquarie Capital Securities in Tokyo, also noting some Nexon shareholders were allowed to offload their holdings immediately.

Nexon, whose most successful offerings include role-playing adventure game MapleStory, where players band together to hunt monsters, and KartRider, has more than 77 million active monthly users, compared with Zynga's 260 million.

Analysts have said that enthusiasm for the IPO may have been dampened by a cyber attack last month in which hackers gained access to personal data, but no financial information, on more than 13 million Nexon subscribers in South Korea.

Nexon's operating profit trebled to 30 billion yen ($385 million) between 2008 and last year, and sales jumped by more than 70 percent to 70 billion yen. The company expects operating profit to rise 23 percent this year, signalling a slowdown in its breakneck growth.

"We expect growth across all regions," Chief Financial Officer Owen Mahoney told Reuters.

The company, which employs 3,240 people, mostly in South Korea, makes most of its money in South Korea and China.

"They're saying that growth will be sustained in China, but will come from inland areas, which I think is a big ask, to be honest," said Macquarie's Gibson. "Most users are coastal, which is the higher income area. Lower income means lower spending."

IPO GO-SLOW

The IPO was the biggest in Japan since drugmaker Otsuka Holdings took in 160 billion yen a year ago, and went ahead despite weak market conditions, with the Nikkei average down about 17 percent this year.

Japan's IPO market has been battered by the March earthquake and the country's weak growth outlook. Companies have raised just 160 billion yen through initial public offerings so far this year, a fraction of the 1 trillion yen seen last year and just a sixth of the average over the past decade.

Nikko Asset Management this month cancelled a planned $586 million IPO, citing weak markets and the general uncertainty sown by Europe's debt crisis.

Nexon has said it will use the IPO proceeds to pay off debt, build a new home for its Nexon Korea Corp unit, upgrade games systems and invest in third-party games developers.

At around 1,250 yen, Nexon trades at 17 times the company's projected 2011 earnings, slightly higher than Gree at 15 times its consensus forecast for the year to June 2012.

"The price-to-earnings ratio is a little high compared with DeNA and Gree, so it's likely to see some selling in the near term ... but with the inclusion in TOPIX at the end of next month we can expect demand from passive funds," said Katsumi Udagawa at Ichiyoshi Securities.

Deutsche Bank initiated coverage of Nexon with a 'hold' rating and a target price of 1,400 yen.

Nomura Securities, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs were joint global coordinators for the IPO, while Barclays Capital was bookrunner on the international tranche. ($1 = 77.8450 Japanese yen)

Screen Shot 2011-12-14 at 11.54.46 AMA friend just sent me this with the disclaimer "THIS IS NUTSO." And indeed it is -- A coffee faucet (!!!) created by Dutch manufacturer Scanomat, that allows you to brew coffee via iPhone app. I don't care if its fake and it's already been covered everywhere, I want one. The Top Brewer has two hidden grinders and allows you to make juice or hot cocoa in addition to a?15 second cup of coffee and 25 second espresso. It is?controlled via iPhone and iPad and babysits your kids. Okay, I'm joking about that last one. Oh and it cleans itself, really, and somehow simultaneously saves energy. This thing is better than a boyfriend.

Bahrain police crack down on highway protest (AP)

MANAMA, Bahrain ? Bahraini security forces used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse hundreds of opposition supporters attempting to protest alongside a highway leading to the island kingdom's capital Thursday.

The clashes follow 10 months of unrest between Bahrain's Sunni monarchy and an opposition movement led by the country's majority Shiites. They came during a visit by the U.S. State Department's top human rights envoy, who expressed concern about the government's use of tear gas and other tough tactics against protesters.

Thursday's clashes erupted near the town of Diraz and other opposition stronghold villages west of the capital, Manama. Riot police were seen chasing protesters away from entrances to the key highway and back into the largely Shiite communities that line the road.

Online activists have issued calls on Twitter and other social media for protesters to occupy the highway, seeking to maintain momentum for protests in the strategically important Gulf nation that hosts the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

Hundreds of protesters, some waving red and white Bahraini flags, were seen along the side of the highway when the clashes broke out in the afternoon.

Witnesses described a heavy police presence in the area ahead of the protest, with security forces dressed in riot gear and helicopters hovering low overhead.

The highway connects a string of largely Shiite villages west of Manama. It leads to a junction that is roughly half a kilometer (a quarter of a mile) south of Manama's Pearl Square, where this year's uprising originated. Government forces evicted protesters and tore down the pearl sculpture that marked the site in March.

The now heavily guarded square holds great symbolic value for the opposition movement, and protesters have repeatedly tried to retake it.

The clashes erupted during a visit by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Michael Posner, head of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.

In prepared remarks to reporters, he praised the king for taking steps to implement reforms recommended in a report last month that outlined human rights abuses carried out by the government. He called on both the government and protesters to refrain from violence.

Posner urged the government to do more.

He cited "the need for tangible action on several urgent issues," including reinstating workers unfairly dismissed from their jobs. He also raised concerns about court cases involving doctors and others that he said appear to be based at least in part on their criticism of the government, as well as proposed media laws that could stifle political debate.

Washington also remains concerned about the government's "excessive use of force, including tear gas, in response to ongoing street protests," he said.

More than 35 people have died in clashes and protest-related violence since February, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts. Bahrain's protests are the largest and most sustained to have hit the Arab monarchies and sheikdoms that line the Persian Gulf.

Dems: IG probing NLRB allegations (Politico)

An investigation has been opened into whether a Republican member of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) received improper enticements to resign and incapacitate the agency, according to Democrats on the House Education and the Workforce Committee.

?We understand that the [NLRB] Inspector General has opened his own investigation into these matters, apparently based on information he has received, and we will await the results of that investigation,? Aaron Albright, a spokesperson for the Democrats on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, told POLITICO in a statement.

Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), the ranking member on the committee, had previously suggested Brian Hayes, the only Republican member currently serving on the NLRB, may have received ?private requests? to resign in order to incapacitate the board and prevent it from passing new labor regulations, potentially favorable to unions and Democrats.

?I am concerned that any decision to resign prematurely will be the result of objectionable motives or improper influence,? wrote Miller in a statement two weeks ago.

The Inspector General?s office would not confirm or deny whether an investigation is ongoing due to privacy concerns but said it is aware of the allegations.

?Dave Berry, Inspector General of the National Labor Relations Board, confirmed that his office is aware of allegations concerning possible enticements offered to Board Member Brian Hayes to resign his position. The allegations that were raised would naturally concern an Inspector General at any agency. However, the NLRB?s Inspector General does not confirm or deny the existence of an investigation,? NLRB spokesperson Nancy Cleeland told POLITICO.

Hayes is one of three members of the NLRB, and the only Republican. Since the NLRB requires three members to function, his resignation would have stalled new regulations which Republicans have opposed.

Last Wednesday, Hayes announced at an NLRB meeting that he would not quit. ?It is not my nature to be obstructionist,? he said. ?I believe resignation would cause the very same harm and collateral damage to the reputation of this agency.?

The Obama administration has been having problems confirming new members to the NLRB board, an agency which Republicans currently view with suspicion.

One of the two Democratic members of the NLRB, Craig Becker, had his Senate confirmation shot down in early 2010, forcing the Obama administration to recess-appoint him in March 2010.

However, Becker?s appointment will expire when the Senate adjourns for recess near the end of this year, denying the NLRB the minimum three members required for quorum.

As such, there is pressure on the NLRB to move forward with a contentious new labor rule that Republicans and business groups allege would restrict the ability of employers to bring concerns about union elections to the agency. Democrats argue that the rule will eliminate unnecessary delays between when employees file for a vote on whether to start a union and the day those votes are cast.

Last Wednesday?s meeting led to a 2-1 vote, split on party lines, that moved the rule forward to be drafted into final language.

Utah home inspired by Disney movie 'Up' sold (omg!)

In this July 6, 2011 photo, a full scale rendition of the house in the animated movie, "Up," located a in Herriman, Utah, will be part of this year's Parade of Homes. The house has been sold to a family who are self-described Disney and Pixar fanatics. Clinton and Lynette Hamblin of Petaluma, Calif., are buying the home in Herriman, Utah, for $400,000. The Hamblins say they were searching for a home in California that was similar to the colorful cottage seen in the movie when they heard about the Disney-approved "Up" house in Utah. (AP Photo/The Salt Lake Tribune, Paul Fraughton)

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Two self-described Disney "fanatics" have purchased a house in Utah modeled after the colorful home featured in the animated movie "Up."

Discovering the house in the Salt Lake City suburb of Herriman, Utah, was a dream come true for Clinton and Lynette Hamblin of Petaluma, Calif. The couple had been looking for a house with some of the same flourishes as the one in the movie, such as a multi-colored exterior or a blue kitchen with retro appliances.

They initially looked in California until they saw news reports about the house in Utah that included every possible detail from the movie and was even officially recognized as the "Up" house by Disney. Even more surprising was the $400,000 price tag, which was less than homes they looked at in California.

For them, however, the real attraction to the house was it underscored the overriding theme of the movie.

"We just love the message of the movie ? adventure is out there," Lynette Hamblin told The Salt Lake Tribune.

The house is modeled on its appearance early in the movie, when Carl and Ellie Frederickson are flush with the optimism of newlyweds. That was before infertility undid their hopes for a family and Ellie's death left Carl a curmudgeonly recluse who refuses to succumb to developers and sell his house.

Homebuilder Adam Bangerter told The Associated Press earlier this year that he and his brothers ? who collectively own Bangerter Homes ? wanted to replicate the house because it's iconic and plays an important role in the movie.

"It illustrates what homeownership really is, and it's not an investment. It's part of the American dream to have a house to care for, to improve and to make part of your family," Bangerter said during a tour of the house.

Herriman City spokeswoman Nicole Martin said about 45,000 people have visited the home for tours, and will continue to do so through the month of December. City leaders even recently passed a resolution honoring the house for its economic impact.

The Hamblins plan to move into the home after closing Jan. 4, which happens to be Lynette Hamblin's birthday.

Magic-Thunder, Clippers-Warriors set for Christmas

(AP) ? Oklahoma City will host Orlando before Blake Griffin and the Los Angeles Clippers visit Golden State on Christmas night, running the NBA's planned opening-day schedule to five games.

Those games were added Friday to the three that were already set when the 2011-12 schedule was originally unveiled: Boston at New York, Miami at Dallas, and Chicago at the Los Angeles Lakers.

Commissioner David Stern said the league hoped to open the season with that tripleheader after announcing a tentative agreement on a new labor deal with the players last Saturday. But the league decided to add two later games, with the nightcap featuring Mark Jackson's debut as Warriors coach.

The revised 66-game schedule will be released Tuesday night during an NBA TV special.

TNT will televise the opener, while ABC gets the NBA finals rematch and the matchup between MVP Derrick Rose and Kobe Bryant, whose Lakers will be playing their first game under former Cleveland coach Mike Brown. The final two contests will air on ESPN.

The Thunder reached the Western Conference finals last season behind league scoring champion Kevin Durant, while the Magic face the uncertainty of Dwight Howard's future with the team.

"It's a different opening day than has ever happened in the past and Christmas Day games have always been a big day for the NBA," ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy said in a statement. "This unique situation combined with the unveiling of a championship banner for the Mavericks in a finals rematch, and then to see the Lakers and the debut of Mike Brown as head coach, those things are all going to be very compelling."

The Dec. 25 opening date is contingent on the CBA being ratified next week.

Lawyers for the league and players' association resumed negotiations Friday on the remaining issues, the so-called B-list items such as drug testing, the draft eligibility age and the commissioner's power to discipline. The goal is to complete the agreement Tuesday so it could be presented at a meeting of player representatives Wednesday, then both sides would vote to ratify it Thursday.

If that happens, training camps and free agency would open next Friday.

Apple juice can pose a health risk ? from calories (AP)

It's true ? apple juice can pose a risk to your health. But not necessarily from the trace amounts of arsenic that people are arguing about.

Despite the government's consideration of new limits on arsenic, nutrition experts say apple juice's real danger is to waistlines and children's teeth. Apple juice has few natural nutrients, lots of calories and, in some cases, more sugar than soda has. It trains a child to like very sweet things, displaces better beverages and foods, and adds to the obesity problem, its critics say.

"It's like sugar water," said Judith Stern, a nutrition professor at the University of California, Davis, who has consulted for candy makers as well as for Weight Watchers. "I won't let my 3-year-old grandson drink apple juice."

Many juices are fortified with vitamins, so they're not just empty calories. But that doesn't appease some nutritionists.

"If it wasn't healthy in the first place, adding vitamins doesn't make it into a health food," and if it causes weight gain, it's not a healthy choice, said Karen Ansel, a registered dietitian in New York and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says juice can be part of a healthy diet, but its policy is blunt: "Fruit juice offers no nutritional benefit for infants younger than 6 months" and no benefits over whole fruit for older kids.

Kids under 12 consume 28 percent of all juice and juice drinks, according to the academy. Nationwide, apple juice is second only to orange juice in popularity. Americans slurp 267 ounces of apple juice on average each year, according to the Food Institute's Almanac of Juice Products and the Juice Products Association, a trade group. Lots more is consumed as an ingredient in juice drinks and various foods.

Only 17 percent of the apple juice sold in the U.S. is produced here. The rest comes from other countries, mostly China, Argentina, Chile and Brazil, the association says.

Television's Dr. Mehmet Oz made that a key point a few months ago when he raised an alarm ? some say a false alarm ? over arsenic in apple juice, based on tests his show commissioned by a private lab. The Food and Drug Administration said that its own tests disagreed and that apple juice is safe.

However, on Wednesday, after Consumer Reports did its own tests on several juice brands and called along with other consumer groups for stricter standards, the FDA said it will examine whether its restrictions on the amount of arsenic allowed in apple juice are stringent enough.

Some forms of arsenic, such as the type found in pesticides, can be toxic and may pose a cancer risk if consumed at high levels or over a long period.

All juice sold in the United States must be safe and meet U.S. standards, said Pat Faison, technical director for the juice association. As for making good nutrition choices, "a lot of the information that people need about fruit juices is on the label," she said.

So what's on those labels?

Carbohydrates, mostly sugars, in a much higher concentration than in milk. Juice has a small amount of protein and minerals and lacks the fiber in whole fruit, the pediatrics academy notes.

Drinking juice delivers a lot of calories quickly so you don't realize how much you've consumed, whereas you would have to eat a lot of apples to get the same amount, and "you would feel much, much more full from the apples," Ansel said.

"Whole fruits are much better for you," said Dr. Frank Greer, a University of Wisconsin, Madison, professor and former head of the pediatrics academy's nutrition committee.

He noted that the WIC program ? the U.S. Department of Agriculture's nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children ? revised its rules in 2005 to replace juice with baby food fruits and vegetables for children over 6 months. More than half of all infants born in the U.S. are eligible for WIC, and the government "really cut back severely on the ability of mothers to get fruit juices" through the program, Greer said.

If you or your family drinks juice, here is some advice from nutrition experts:

_Choose a juice fortified with calcium and vitamin D-3.

_Give children only pasteurized juice ? that's the only type safe from germs that can cause serious disease.

_Don't give juice before 6 months of age, and never put it in bottles or covered cups that allow babies and children to consume it throughout the day, which can cause tooth decay. For the same reason, don't give infants juice at bedtime.

_Limit juice to 4 to 6 ounces per day for children ages 1 to 6, and 8 to 12 ounces for those ages 7 to 18.

_Encourage kids to eat fruit.

_Don't be swayed by healthy-sounding label claims. "No sugar added" doesn't mean it isn't full of naturally occurring sugar. And "cholesterol-free" is silly ? only animal products contain cholesterol.

Stealthy cellphone software stirs outcry

(AP) ? Technology bloggers are asking if our cellphones are spying on us after a security researcher said a piece of software hidden on millions of phones was recording virtually everything people do with them.

Amid a broad outcry, Sen. Al Franken is calling for an investigation. A class-action lawsuit has been filed against the software's maker, Carrier IQ Inc. of Mountain View, California

The software, which Carrier IQ says is used on some 150 million mobile devices, appears relatively innocuous. It does watch what owners of Sprint Nextel Corp. and AT&T Inc. smartphones do with them, including what people type and the numbers they dial. But it doesn't seem to transmit every keystroke to the company. Instead, it kicks into action when there's a problem, like a call that doesn't go through, and it lets the phone company know.

"It is software that is developed in partnership with carriers with the intent to improve network performance. As far as we can tell, it meets this description in execution," said Tim Wyatt, principal engineer at Lookout, a cellphone security company.

"In line with our privacy policy, we solely use CIQ software data to improve wireless network and service performance," AT&T said in a statement.

Carrier IQ says the data its software gathers is stored by the phone companies or at Carrier IQ's facilities. It doesn't sell the data to third parties. Phone companies, of course, already are custodians of a wealth of private information, including whom you call, where you surf and what your text messages say.

The brouhaha started a few weeks ago, when a programmer named Trevor Eckhart documented Carrier IQ's workings with videos on his blog. The software company threatened him with a lawsuit if he didn't take the information down. The Electronic Frontier Foundation took on Eckhart's case, and the company backed down.

Eckhart posted another video this week, showing Carrier IQ's software logging keystrokes on an HTC EVO 3D from Sprint.

A central privacy worry is what kind of data Carrier IQ is retaining.

Andrew Coward, a Carrier IQ vice president, said the software doesn't record every keystroke or send information about all of them back to the company. The only keystrokes it cares about are specific administrative commands, including those instructing the software to phone "home." The rest it discards, Coward said.

"We never expected to need the content of SMS messages, so we didn't code for it," Coward told The Associated Press in an interview.

Apple Inc. has said it has stopped supporting Carrier IQ in most of its products. Separately, the company came under fire last year over location-tracking features of the iPhone and made a software change to keep data on users' movements for less time.

For now, there's no easy way to uninstall the Carrier IQ software without unsanctioned third-party software. Coward said it is "too early to tell" whether the company will make any substantial changes to the software because of the uproar.

Medvedev suggests prosecution for Russia space failure (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russian President Dmitry Medvedev raised the prospect of criminal prosecution for space mishaps on Saturday following a series of failed launches that have embarrassed Russia.

Earlier this month, a probe designed to bring back soil samples from the Mars moon Phobos got stuck in Earth's orbit, leaving Russia's first interplanetary mission in years with almost no chance of success.

The probe failure came less than three months after a cargo ship carrying food and fuel to the International Space Station burned up in the atmosphere shortly after launch.

"Recent failures are a strong blow to our competitiveness. It does not mean that something fatal has happened, it means that we need to carry out a detailed review and punish those guilty," Medvedev told reporters in televised comments.

"I am not suggesting putting them up against the wall like under Josef Vissarionovich (Stalin), but seriously punish either financially or, if the fault is obvious, it could be a disciplinary or even criminal punishment," he said.

Medvedev has recently made similar calls for strict punishment after disasters blamed on carelessness, corruption and problems with Russia's rusty infrastructure, such as a riverboat sinking in July that killed 122.

Pakistan stops NATO supplies after raid kills up to 28 (Reuters)

YAKKAGHUND, Pakistan (Reuters) ? NATO helicopters and fighter jets attacked two military outposts in northwest Pakistan on Saturday, killing as many as 28 troops and plunging U.S.-Pakistan relations deeper into crisis.

Pakistan shut down NATO supply routes into Afghanistan - used for sending in nearly half of the alliance's land shipments - in retaliation for the worst such incident since Islamabad uneasily allied itself with Washington following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

Islamabad also said it had ordered the United States to vacate a drone base in the country, but a senior U.S. official said Washington had received no such request and noted that Pakistan had made similar eviction threats in the past, without following through.

NATO and U.S. officials expressed regret about the deaths of the Pakistani soldiers, indicating the attack may have been an error; but the exact circumstances remained unclear.

"Senior U.S. civilian and military officials have been in touch with their Pakistani counterparts from Islamabad, Kabul and Washington to express our condolences, our desire to work together to determine what took place, and our commitment to the U.S.-Pakistan partnership which advances our shared interests, including fighting terrorism in the region," said White House national security council spokesman Tommy Vieter.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar spoke by telephone, as did General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Pakistani Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

The NATO-led force in Afghanistan confirmed that NATO aircraft had probably killed Pakistani soldiers in an area close to the Afghan-Pakistani border.

"Close air support was called in, in the development of the tactical situation, and it is what highly likely caused the Pakistan casualties," said General Carsten Jacobson, spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

He added he could not confirm the number of casualties, but ISAF was investigating. "We are aware that Pakistani soldiers perished. We don't know the size, the magnitude," he said.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani said the killings were "an attack on Pakistan's sovereignty", adding: "We will not let any harm come to Pakistan's sovereignty and solidarity."

Pakistan's Foreign Office said it would take up the matter "in the strongest terms" with NATO and the United States, while army chief Kayani said steps would be taken to respond "to this irresponsible act".

"A strong protest has been launched with NATO/ISAF in which it has been demanded that strong and urgent action be taken against those responsible for this aggression."

Two military officials said up to 28 troops had been killed and 11 wounded in the attack on the outposts, about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the Afghan border. The Pakistani military said 24 troops were killed and 13 wounded.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. (2100 GMT) in the Baizai area of Mohmand, where Pakistani troops are fighting Taliban militants. Across the border is Afghanistan's Kunar province, which has seen years of heavy fighting.

"Pakistani troops effectively responded immediately in self-defence to NATO/ISAF's aggression with all available weapons," the Pakistani military statement said.

The commander of NATO-led forces in Afghanistan, General John R. Allen, offered his condolences to the families of Pakistani soldiers who "may have been killed or injured".

Dempsey's spokesman, Colonel David Lapan, could not confirm the closure of the Pakistani border crossing to trucks carrying supplies for ISAF forces. However, he noted that "if true, we have alternate routes we can use, as we have in the past".

POORLY MARKED

Around 40 troops were stationed at the outposts, military sources said. Two officers were reported among the dead. "They without any reasons attacked on our post and killed soldiers asleep," said a senior Pakistani officer, requesting anonymity.

The border is often poorly marked, and Afghan and Pakistani maps have differences of several kilometres in some places, military officials have said.

However, Pakistani military spokesman Major-General Athar Abbas said NATO had been given maps of the area, with Pakistani military posts identified.

"When the other side is saying there is a doubt about this, there is no doubt about it. These posts have been marked and handed over to the other side for marking on their maps and are clearly inside Pakistani territory."

The incident occurred a day after Allen met Kayani to discuss border control and enhanced cooperation.

A senior military source told Reuters that after the meeting that set out "to build confidence and trust, these kind of attacks should not have taken place".

BLOCKED SUPPLIES

Pakistan is a vital land route for nearly half of NATO supplies shipped overland to its troops in Afghanistan, a NATO spokesman said. Land shipments account for about two thirds of the alliance's cargo shipments into Afghanistan.

Hours after the raid, NATO supply trucks and fuel tankers bound for Afghanistan were stopped at Jamrud town in the Khyber tribal region near the city of Peshawar, officials said.

The border crossing at Chaman in southwestern Baluchistan province was also closed, Frontier Corps officials said.

A meeting of the cabinet's defence committee convened by Gilani "decided to close with immediate effect NATO/ISAF logistics supply lines," according to a statement issued by Gilani's office.

The committee decided to ask the United States to vacate, within 15 days, the Shamsi Air Base, a remote installation in Baluchistan used by U.S. forces for drone strikes which has long been at the centre of a dispute between Islamabad and Washington.

The meeting also decided the government would "revisit and undertake a complete review of all programmes, activities and cooperative arrangements with US/NATO/ISAF, including diplomatic, political, military and intelligence".

A similar incident on Sept 30, 2010, which killed two Pakistani service personnel, led to the closure of one of NATO's supply routes through Pakistan for 10 days. NATO apologised for that incident, which it said happened when NATO gunships mistook warning shots by Pakistani forces for a militant attack.

Relations between the United States and Pakistan were strained by the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden by U.S. special forces in Pakistan in May, which Pakistan called a flagrant violation of sovereignty.

Pakistan's jailing of a CIA contractor and U.S. accusations that Pakistan backed a militant attack on the U.S. embassy in Kabul have added to the tensions.

"This will have a catastrophic effect on Pakistan-U.S. relations. The public in Pakistan are going to go berserk on this," said Charles Heyman, senior defence analyst at British military website Armedforces.co.uk.

Other analysts, including Rustam Shah Mohmand, a former ambassador to Afghanistan, predicted Pakistan would protest and close the supply lines for some time, but that ultimately "things will get back to normal".
