Intuit shows off MicroMint concept app for the WIMM One smartwatch, we go hands-on

Given the amount of time we spent with the WIMM One smartwatch, you'd think we would have had enough fodder for a full-blown review. Alas, though, one critical piece was missing: apps. Not test apps, like a balance ball game, but honest to goodness apps from major third-party developers. Well, we got a chance to check out a concept app from Intuit, the company behind Mint.com (no TurboTax for this 1.41-inch display, sorry).

What can we say? When a device has a screen this tiny, the elevator pitch is going to be mighty brief. Here's how MicroMint works: just swipe left to right to see your balances for different accounts. There's no limit to how many it can display, and when you reach the end of the list, the app will just start cycling through again. As you can see in the video demo below, the app's performance is limited by the watch's 667MHz ARM11 CPU and 256MB RAM, which is to say you'll notice some lag as you swipe from one bank balance to another. And that's it. This is all the app does; don't expect to take advantage of Mint's other features, like budget-planning and mapping out savings goals (not that you'd want any graphs or itemized lists crammed onto that 160x160 screen).

For now, of course, this concept app is just that, a prototype. Intuit won't commit to releasing it, much less share any sort of timeline. Interestingly, though, David Siegel on Intuit's development team suggested to us that the app might be of more use when WIMM releases its next-gen watch with NFC. With that radio on board, he says, the app could potentially allow not just for balance-checking, but credit card payments as well. Additionally, the outfit is mulling a similar app for the Sony SmartWatch, which also runs Android and supports Java-based apps. The only development hiccup, he says, would be adapting the app for Sony-specific APIs. That's a whole lot of ifs for one paragraph, though, so for now we'll leave you with a super quick hands-on video, just past the break.

Edgar Alvarez contributed to this report.

Santorum looks to deny Romney a win by any means

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rick Santorum, showing signs of fatigue and frustration while grasping for strategies to right his unsteady White House bid, is trying to derail Republican front-runner Mitt Romney using any means available ? even contradictory messages.

Santorum has called Romney "the worst Republican in the country" to challenge President Barack Obama, but in a subsequent interview he said he would consider serving as Romney's running mate. He is not letting pass a vulgar fight with The New York Times while betting big on the health care debate, which his campaign says is intensifying at the perfect time to resurrect his fading candidacy.

"This is the most important issue in this election," Santorum declared outside the Supreme Court on Monday while attorneys inside debated the constitutionality of the president's health care law. "There's one candidate who's uniquely disqualified to make the case. That's the reason I'm here and he's not."

Seizing on the health care debate as Romney focuses on the nation's economy, Santorum is fueling tea partyers' lingering skepticism about the former Massachusetts governor, who signed into law a state-based health care program that helped inspire Obama's plan. He dismisses Romney's broadening support as the product of political elites, while pitching himself as an up-from-his-bootstraps candidate who came from "public housing" ? a misleading claim that offers a stark contrast with Romney's life of wealth and privilege.

In spite of Santorum's loosely plotted uphill strategy, a growing number of establishment-minded Republicans are coalescing around Romney. On Monday, GOP House Whip Kevin McCarthy of California became the latest member of the party's leadership in Congress to sign on. Romney remains on pace to capture the nomination in June.

The challenge seems to push Santorum to fight harder.

"He's the worst candidate to go against Barack Obama on the most important issue of the day," Santorum said Monday, highlighting the Massachusetts health care law Romney signed in 2006. It requires all Massachusetts residents to purchase insurance, the same "individual mandate" in question in Obama's law.

Asked in a separate interview if he'd consider serving as vice presidential under Romney, he said, "Of course."

"I'll do whatever is necessary to help our country," he told the Christian Broadcasting Network.

Struggling to settle on a consistent message, Santorum turned to social issues as part of a throw-it-all-out-there approach in recent days, hoping to find something that sticks with Republican voters.

"Gay marriage went into effect under Gov. Romney. Fifty-dollar abortions went into effect under Gov. Romney, and free abortions for low-income people under Romney," Santorum said in Sheboygan, Wis.

The campaign's new health care offensive, punctuated by Santorum's appearance outside the Supreme Court, is backed by a series of web videos featuring Massachusetts residents criticizing that state's health care plan. The videos, filmed by Santorum's campaign last week, are set to be released this week.

The vast majority of Massachusetts voters, however, support the health care plan, according to recent polling.

Santorum also is highlighting his status as a working-man's alternative to Romney, who amassed a personal fortune in the business world. The former senator's recent schedule has featured guns, golf and bowling.

"From 50 feet with a 1911 Colt revolver, 14 shots, 14 on the target," Santorum told voters last weekend. "I'm not bragging. Just the facts, ma'am. Just the facts."

He bowled three consecutive strikes in borrowed bowling shoes. The next day, he followed up with another bowling alley visit. He bristled when asked to talk about the race.

"No, I'm sorry. No. It's a bowling alley," he said as he changed back into his cowboy boots.

Santorum's mood has been more caustic than usual. He used profanity when responding to a New York Times reporter who asked him to clarify his assertion that Romney is the worst Republican to run for president.

"Would you guys stop distorting what I'm saying?" Santorum challenged the reporter after a rally Sunday. "Quit distorting our words. If I see it, it's bulls---. C'mon, man. What are you doing?"

On Monday, Santorum didn't back down from the angry outburst.

"I don't regret taking on a New York Times reporter who was out of line," he said as his campaign looked to turn the incident into a fundraising appeal. "If you're a conservative and you haven't taken on a New York Times reporter, you're not worth your salt as far as I'm concerned."

His latest biographical sales pitch raises some questions. He introduced himself in Sheboygan "as someone who grew up in Western Pennsylvania, in a steel town, a manufacturing town. ... I grew up in public housing on the VA post."

But he did not grow up in a public housing project, as the statement seems to suggest. His parents were employed by the Veterans Administration.

"My parents were both working there, so we were able to get post housing. My mom was an administrative nurse so they wanted her close by. ... My dad was head of the psychology department," he later clarified. "They were nice little apartments but, you know, they were small."

Santorum adviser Hogan Gidley conceded that the campaign was at a critical point, but he suggested the Supreme Court case would help gets things back on track.

"This is obviously an important day for him and the campaign," Gidley said outside the Supreme Court. "It's perfect timing."

Building a Garage ? A Great Way to Expand Your Living Space ...

If building a garage seems like a good idea for your next home improvement project, read this article carefully. The end product of any new construction should add value to your home and hopefully be a good experience. Following are some steps to take to ensure both outcomes.

1. Be sure that you know exactly why you are building a garage

- Do you need more (or more secure) parking for your vehicles

- Do you need more storage space (or a combination of parking and storage)

- Do you want an area for hobbies or a home workshop (e.g. auto mechanics, woodworking, furniture refinishing, sewing, building model planes, etc.)

- Do you want extra living space such as a bedroom for your youngest child who is going to a local college next year, a music or art studio, or a private home office

You can go in a dozens directions when building a garage. It is important to be clear about what you need and want to avoid wasting time, effort and money or the opposite ? to overspend unnecessarily. The goal is to have a finished space that meets your needs.

2. Decide how you want the space finished

In order to choose the best type of garage building plans, you will need to keep in mind the intended use and the desired finish for each section of the garage. Will you need bare bones, moderate, or luxurious plans? Some factors (but not all) that should be considered are:

- Walls and ceiling ? exposed beams, sheet rock (painted or unpainted), insulation, sound-proofing

- Flooring ? sealed, heated, carpeted, wood, etc.

- Electrical wiring and plumbing requirements

- Heating and/or air conditioning (HVAC)

- Number of windows and doors (How much light and accessibility do you want)

- Other amenities ? special lighting, compact kitchen, washer/dryer, workbench, secure storage

- Style of the exterior (architectural style should match your home)

3. Understand city building ordinances and obtain all necessary permits

Do not skip this step when building a garage! If you do, you can pay dearly for it down the road. If you use a contractor, they will probably take care of this step for you. But, we recommend that you know the rules and abide by them.

4. Find a good set of garage building plans

You will need a good set of building plans to get estimates on materials and to obtain bids from contractors (even if you think you may build it yourself). The estimates will help you decide if you want to go ahead with the plans you have chosen, or if you need to make some kind of adjustment. They will also help you decide who should build it ? you or a contractor.

Suppliers will be able to provide an estimate on materials much faster if you are able to give them a materials list. This is often included in a good set of building plans.

5. Decide who will be doing the work

Being your own contractor can be very tempting and if successful, it can bring a lot of personal satisfaction. However, a word of caution . . . do not take on the project unless you have the skills and experience, plus the time to do it well. Poor construction, sloppy work, or a half-built garage is far worse than no garage.

Even if you decide to do it yourself, hire subcontractors to do the work that you are not licensed to do, and most likely should not do, such as electrical wiring, plumbing, siding, and roofing.

If you can afford it and choose wisely, hiring a general contractor is the easy way to build a garage. With a complete set of good building plans, the contractor will take care of everything and be finished before you know it, if all goes well. It is important for you to check in regularly to see how things are going.

The suppliers who provide your materials estimates can give you names of reputable contractors if you don?t personally know one. It is likely that the same contractor?s name will come up more than once, and should be the one(s) you interview first.

One last thought ? When building a garage, don?t skimp on space! If you can make it bigger . . . make it bigger!

Energy officials prepare for summer without San Onofre plant

California energy officials are working to stave off the potential for summer power shortages if the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station remains out of service.

San Onofre has been shut down since Jan. 31, when a tube that carries hot, radioactive water in one of the plant's newly installed steam generators in the Unit 3 reactor sprang a leak. The mishap released a small amount of radioactive steam.

The reactor was taken offline and Southern California Edison, the plant's operator, began pressure-testing 129 tubes that showed excessive wear, while the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission dispatched a team to investigate the issue. Since then, eight tubes have failed pressure stress tests. Meanwhile, in Unit 2, the plant's other working reactor, which had been shut down for routine maintenance since early January, they found excessive wear and tear on 192 more tubes.

Jennifer Manfre, a spokeswoman with Edison, said the company is planning for the possibility that the plant could be offline through the summer.

If that happens, it will be the first time that one of California's two nuclear plants has been shut down for an extended period during the summer months when demand peaks, said Stephanie McCorkle, a spokeswoman with California Independent System Operator, which operates the state's wholesale power grid.

So far, with energy demand low due to mild weather, the plant's shutdown has had no impact on service.

In a report presented to the Independent System Operator board Thursday, staffers said that in a major heat wave or transmission line outage during the peak season, South Orange County and the San Diego and Los Angeles areas could face energy shortages without the 2,200 megawatts of power generated by San Onofre.

To prevent that, officials plan to produce more energy from other sources and convince customers to scale back on demand.

"If, in fact, we do nothing, there could be some potential issues down there," said ISO Chief Executive Stephen Berberich. "We don't intend to do nothing."

Independent System Operator staffers said that the danger of outages could be mitigated by bringing back two retired generating units at a natural gas power plant in Huntington Beach, as well as stepping up transmission upgrades and calling for voluntary conservation through "flex alerts" and other measures.

Manfre said Edison is working with the Independent System Operator and San Diego Gas & Electric, which owns a 20% share in the plant, to plan for the summer. Among other measures, she said the company is accelerating a transmission project that will serve parts of South Orange County, and is in discussions with the California Public Utilities Commission to implement a rate savings incentive program for customers who reduce their usage.

Some observers voiced concerns that officials will use consumers' fear of rolling blackouts to push the plant back into service before the issues are fixed. S. David Freeman, former head of the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, wrote a letter to the Independent System Operator chastising officials there for raising the specter of rolling blackouts in previous public statements.

"The problems at San Onofre are serious enough to require the NRC to dispatch a team to the plant site to discover the cause of the problems," he wrote. "They don't need the pressure caused by the fear of rolling blackouts fanned by the spokesman for the ISO."

McCorkle said the power grid operator is most concerned about safety and is not pushing for a quick return to service for San Onofre.

The World of Computer Gaming Today at Peri Helion Global

Computer gaming has come a long way since it was introduced to the world a few decades ago. Back then, the computer games were quite simple and even crude at times. The graphics were not that impressive, and the sound effects hardly made an impact. However, we really enjoyed playing those games simply because they were considered cutting edge at that time. Nevertheless, playing computer games was widely perceived at that time to be just for kids. Today, that is hardly the case, as people from all walks of life now spend a lot of time playing all sorts of games on computers.

The first thing you would notice about computer games these days is the quality of the graphics. More often than not, the graphics are so realistic that you would sometimes feel like you are actually in the game. This is often the case with first-person shooter or FPS games. As you shoot, hack or stab an enemy or a monster, the blood that spurts out of their bodies seem like the real thing. The sound, meanwhile is just plain superb. To fully appreciate the sound effects of a computer game, hook your PC up to a set of excellent speakers and prepare to be blown away.

However, there is one requirement that you must fulfill in order to enjoy these games. You must have a computer that is fast and powerful enough to be able to run these games. If you already have your own gaming computer, then that would be more than enough. If your computer is of the regular variety, you need to do things to boost its capabilities. If it were up to me, I will speed up my pc by upgrading certain components of my computer. However, you can always buy a computer specifically designed for gaming if you want to.

(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI's arrival in Mexico on Friday will reveal his ability to communicate with a people whose passionate adoration of his predecessor threatens to overshadow the pontiff's message of peace and continuing faith for a country shaken by horrific drug violence, the Vatican's ambassador pledged on the eve of the trip.

Pope John Paul II was greeted with ecstatic scenes on each of his five trips to Mexico, whose faithful today consider him practically one of the country's patron saints.

In contrast, there was little visible excitement about the more austere and less charismatic Benedict less than 24 hours before his arrival in Guanajuato, a deeply conservative and highly observant state in sun-baked central Mexico. Campgrounds with a capacity for hundreds of thousands of pilgrims were virtually empty. Traffic on the highways leading to the sites of the pope's visit didn't appear heavier than on an ordinary weekday night.

Carlos Aguiar, president of the Mexican Episcopal Conference, said he expected the faithful to begin arriving Friday.

The papal envoy, Christophe Pierre, said Benedict's visit would allow Mexicans to "discover the pope" and "his ability to communicate, to speak deeply, but simply."

There were some stirrings of enthusiasm about Benedict's first trip to Mexico. About 60 people who described themselves as Catholics unaffiliated with any church burned brush to create a neater vista along a section of the pope's route from the airport to the Catholic school where he will spend his three nights in Mexico.

"It's the first time a pope has visited our community. We're excited," Maria Belen, a 36-year-old homemaker, said as she swept inches of powdery dust and gravel off a sidewalk.

Farther down the highway, young men and women sold flags in the yellow-and-white Vatican colors, although few motorists stopped to buy them.

The biggest crowd appeared to be the thousands gathered outside an evangelical Protestant church sitting at the highway exit leading to Bicentennial Park, where Benedict will deliver Mass on Sunday.

"We are not Roman Catholics. We are the Light of the World Church," a huge banner announced to passing motorists.

Church spokesman Ezequiel Zamora said the convention of young missionaries had been planned long before the pope's visit was announced, and the evangelical church had no intention of upstaging the pontiff.

Guanajuato is 93.8 percent Catholic, the highest percentage in Mexico, but Protestant and evangelical denominations have made deeper inroads in other parts of the country, particularly along the northern and southern borders.

The last time a pope visited Mexico, more than 1 million believers cheered and wept in the streets of Mexico City. Dancers dressed in Aztec costumes shook rattles and blew conch shells inside the cathedral where John Paul II canonized the first Indian saint in the Americas.

A decade later, Benedict comes to a church battling to overcome painful setbacks that include legalized abortion and gay marriage in the capital of the most populous Catholic country in the Spanish-speaking world.

It is also a nation grappling with a drug war that has spread fear into once-tranquil regions such as Guanajuato.

"There is a very immense peace that we need in Mexico because of the insecurity," said Marcela Arguello, a 26-year-old housewife who said she planned to stand along the route of the papal motorcade through the city of Leon, the state's largest city.

Mexico has been traumatized by the deaths of more than 47,000 people in drug-related violence in less than six years, and while Guanajuato is far from major drug trafficking routes, the shadow of the conflict looms even here.

"Yes, he'll talk about violence, we can't ignore that, but I can tell you as a representative of the Holy Father that there's much more than violence in Mexico," Pierre said.

"The Holy Father, in the name of God, comes to remind, to ask people not to lose their path in life," Pierre added.

A recent series of apparently gang-related shootings has killed some two dozen people in Guanajuato state, which is noted for leather goods, auto factories and picturesque tourist towns.

Yet even the drug cartels profess to be people of faith. At least 11 banners signed by the pseudo-religious Knights Templar gang were found in five municipalities of Guanajuato last week, including in Leon, offering peace during the papal trip.

As many as 300,000 people are expected to gather for the Sunday Mass, a large turnout even in a state that is so heavily Catholic and a stronghold of President Felipe Calderon's conservative National Action Party, which has roots in militantly Catholic organizations that formed decades ago to challenge an atheistic federal government.

The hacker group Anonymous in Mexico crashed at least two of the websites for Benedict's visit to Mexico on Thursday, claiming his trip is a political move to support the president's party.

Anonymous Mexico said in a video posted on social media sites that the pope's visit will cost Mexicans money that could be better spent on the poor, and is meant to support the PAN in the July 1 presidential election. PAN candidate Josefina Vazquez Mota trails front-runner Enrique Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party by at least 10 percentage points in most polls.

The official campaign season starts at the end of this month.

The pope's "visit comes precisely at the start of the electoral campaigns," said the faceless Anonymous figure in the video. "The PAN will take this as a political weapon to win the votes of millions of Catholics in Mexico."

Guanajuato's constitution declares that life begins at conception and bars abortion with extremely limited exceptions. Seven women were jailed there in 2010 for the deaths of their newborns and later released. The women said they had miscarriages, not abortions.

Benedict's church is encouraging more such laws across Mexico, reacting partly to the legalization of gay marriage and abortion in Mexico City, the cultural and political center of the country.

At the same time, church leaders are fighting to overcome their share of the global child sex-abuse scandal, which destroyed the reputation of the most influential Mexican figure in the church.

The Rev. Marcial Maciel founded the Legionaries of Christ order, which John Paul II praised as a model of rectitude. But a series of investigations forced the order to acknowledge in 2010 that Maciel had sexually abused seminarians and fathered three children. Church documents released in a book this week reveal the Vatican had been told of Maciel's drug abuse and pederasty decades ago.

Calderon's government is backing legislation that would end now often ignored restriction on religious observances in public places, as well as a ban on religious participation in politics.

If approved, it could lay the groundwork for laws allowing church ownership of media and openly religious education on school property, said political analyst John Ackerman at the legal research institute at Mexico's National Autonomous University.

"This opens the door for the church to start using public spaces," Ackerman said. "It has the full intention to be interpreted as occupying public spaces with religious ceremonies, that's what's on the table."

Various stylish medical & nursing uniforms

?

?

Over the years or over the last 5-6 decades the need for good quality medical and nursing cloths have only got bigger and today it?s very much part of our regular lives. So what used to be worn only in the long corridors of hospitals and medical barracks have now entered our living room in a big way. Use of medical scrubs started long ago and without digging deep into that history I?d rather focus upon the latest discoveries and such other innovations made on the way these garments have been used so far. ?

See, the basic will always remain as the basics but it?s the improvisations made upon them, that?s what is the subject of interest. Otherwise as we know that doctors, nurses and people related to healthcare professions need to protect themselves from unwanted dirt, germs and bacteria and that is why the use of various medical garments has slowly but very steadily come into the mainstream of medical science.

I won?t call it a revolution or something like that rather; I?d prefer to say that like any other thing, medical cloths were also modified mainly due to necessity. Medical personnel need to be clean and germ-free and what best than a pair of nursing scrubs, gowns or gloves? More than fashion, it came out from the demands of the specific regular duties of nurses.

Now there are different kinds of medical garments to be seen in the market. Men scrubs are usually not that trendy; generally they are plain colored. Which color will someone use also depends upon the likings of a particular person.

?Many nurses feel that while you are serving or treating a patient it doesn?t look good to wear all these funky colored stuffs whereas others think that wearing colorful medical uniforms help the ailing patient feel better from mentally. On the other side of the story, men aren?t that finicky about these medical cloths and try to remain as formal as possible. I personally feel that while you are working at any lab or hospital for any medical purposes, it?s not the best idea to wear fashionable medical uniforms that may get horribly dirty by some cream or ingredients used for various medical purposes. ?

Thus the bottom line we see, as far as wearing medical uniforms are concerned, is that you need to get rid of bacteria, germs and dirt in the first place. Wearing medical cloths is more about inevitability and ease rather than fashion and brazenness. Thanks to the presence of whole lot of nursing scrubs and online scrubs selling companies purchasing these garments aren?t that difficult.? Moreover online shopping is very easy and quick. Always check that you are buying the best quality outfits; colors and fabrics aren?t that crucial as far as wearing medical cloths and scrubs are concerned but never compromise with the quality of the cloth.

Picturing Spring: An Equinox Celebration on Tor.com: Abbott Handerson Thayer, Stephen Hickman, Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, N.C Wyeth, J.C. Leyendecker, Walter Everett, Daniel Ridgeway Knight, John William Waterhouse
In what I hope will become a regular feature, Irene Gallo, art director of Tor, Forge, Starscape and Tor.com, has reprised the idea behind her post from last December, Picturing Winter, a Solstice Celebration, as Picturing Spring: An Equinox Celebration.

The basis of the original post was to ask several illustrators and art directors to suggest some favorite images of winter, created by themselves, other contemporary artists or artists from history.

The result was a treat, as I mentioned in my post about it, and though it was meant as a one-off article, Gallo decided to continue because, in her words, ??the post was too much fun to put together and I learned way too much not to try it again?.

I think her readers would agree on both counts.

This time around the subject is spring and the vernal equinox, and the result is a similarly wonderful, and enlightening, array of illustrations, concept art, museum and gallery art from both contemporary and historic sources.

Readers familiar with Lines and Colors know that I love this kind of mix of styles, genres and centuries, and I was delighted when Gallo asked me to participate in this round.

My suggestions were two images by Daniel Ridgeway Knight and one by John William Waterhouse (images above, bottom three).

The overall mix in her post is a treat, and the article includes comments by the participants and Gallo on the artists and works chosen. You may find some beautiful works and artists that are new to you.

The images in the post are linked to larger versions, and you will find it worth looking up artists with whom you?re not familiar to find more of their work.

Don?t forget to click on the names of the illustrators, gallery artists and art directors who made the suggestions to follow back to their own sites and blogs; in addition to the artists suggested, they themselves represent a ?tip of the iceberg? dive into a wealth of dazzling artwork.

Podcast Basics For Center Line MLM Business Bloggers

Today?s Center Line direct selling article is for Center Line internet rookies who want to kick up their web marketing a notch by adding a podcast to their Center Line home business blog.

A podcast is a multimedia file that is downloaded for playback on a mobile device such as an iPod or laptop computer. It can be a digital recording of a radio program or, more often, a program produced solely for online distribution. A podcast can be a recording of a webcast: a live Center Line program that is ?streamed? or broadcast on the internet in real time. When this is the case, it is similar to a DVD recording of a live program that you store in the database of your playback device.

A related term is the acronym RSS which probably originally stood for Rich Site Summary feed but is sometimes used for Really Simple Syndication. You have probably seen the term RSS on websites. An RSS feed allows digital files to be downloaded in a standard format. Eastpointe podcast listeners often subscribe to favorite ongoing podcasts. When new podcasts are produced, they are automatically downloaded by RSS applications.

It is fairly simple hardware- and software-wise to product your own podcast for your Center Line online business
. Your laptop may already have recording capability. If not, you can buy any equipment you need in the Eastpointe area.

Center Line business owners operating on a shoestring will be happy to know that basic recording and editing software can be downloaded for free. If you want to get fancy, you can always buy more sophisticated software at Michigan specialty computer stores. I recommend using a headset microphone so the mic is always in the right spot to get a clear and consistent recording.

Now the fun part: what will you podcast? The possibilities are endless for Center Line direct marketers. You can record Michigan trade show presentations, interviews with founding distributors of your Center Line direct sales company, or create an entertaining pitch about your Eastpointe business opportunity. Let your expertise and enthusiasm shine.

Creating a podcast gives you a chance to connect with potential Center Line customers or downline members in a personal way.

Romney wins Illinois GOP primary

Mitt Romney and his wife Ann celebrate their victory in the Illinois GOP primary at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel on Tuesday.

By Michael O'Brien, msnbc.com

?

Updated at 3:33 a.m. ET ? Mitt Romney won the Illinois Republican primary with ease on Tuesday night, allowing him to grow his delegate advantage over his rivals in the fight for the party's?presidential nomination.

The primary?had offered Republicans maybe their best chance yet of a genuine one-on-one battle between the former Massachusetts governor and Rick Santorum, his chief competitor for the nod.

"Elections are about choices. And today, hundreds of thousands of people in Illinois have joined millions of people across the country to join our cause," Romney told a throng of supporters in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg.

As a result of the Illinois vote, Romney's delegate tally rose, though?the state-wide popular vote had no technical bearing on the eventual allocation of delegates.

In Illinois, voters elect delegates separately on candidates' behalf.

A total of 54 delegates were at stake on Tuesday, and NBC News projected as of 3:25 a.m. ET that 41 went to Romney and 8 to Santorum.

Check out NBC's Decision 2012 delegate tally here

Still, the primary, held in President Barack Obama's adopted home state (typically a Democratic stronghold in the general election), gave Romney a chance to further his campaign's case that he is the inevitable Republican nominee. He achieved his victory with a similar coalition of voters that had tended to support him in previous caucuses and primaries.

Romney show signs of strength as Republicans begin to coalesce

The ex-governor ran better with more affluent and educated voters, as well as moderates and voters who described themselves as "somewhat" conservative. Thirty-five percent of primary voters said in exit polls that a candidate's ability to beat Obama was most important to them; Romney won 71 percent of those voters to Santorum's 17 percent. Similarly, 58 percent of primary voters said the economy was their top issue, and Romney bested Santorum among those voters by a 17-point margin.

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney delivers remarks to his supporters following his win in the Illinois primary.

Santorum continued to outperform Romney among downscale and less educated voters, along with the most conservative Republicans and evangelical Christians.

'We don't need a manager'
He emphasized his ideological steadiness versus Romney in remarks on Tuesday evening, deriding Romney by implication as a timid manager of the status quo.

"This is an election about fundamental and foundational things," he said from Pennsylvania.?"This is not about who's the best person to manage Washington. We don't need a manager."

The difference in Tuesday's primary was that these voters made up a smaller share of the electorate than in states like Mississippi and Alabama -- the conservative hotbeds Santorum won last week.

First Read: Illinois isn't Alabama or Mississippi

Despite Romney's victory, the Republican race appeared poised to stretch on at least weeks longer. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has shown no willingness to leave the race, and Santorum's campaign has circulated its delegate math, which focuses on halting Romney's march to gather the 1,144 delegates needed to secure the nomination.

This would spark a contested convention when Republicans meet to formally make their nomination in August.

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has focused almost exclusively on President Barack Obama in recent days instead of the other GOP candidates. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

According to NBC News projections early Wednesday, Romney had won 485 delegates. Santorum had accrued 191 delegates, while Gingrich had won 137 and Paul had received 34.

The Santorum campaign made its case to reporters on Tuesday why 1,144 was still an attainable goal for the former senator, though he would have to perform especially well in future contests in order to best Romney.

For Santorum, the Illinois primary had?meant an opportunity to again upset Romney in a Midwestern nominating contest the frontrunner had been expected to win. Santorum battled the former Massachusetts governor closely in both Ohio and Michigan, but Romney's superior campaign organization and finances -- combined with millions in ads bought by a supportive super PAC -- ultimately carried the day.

? Sarah Conard / Reuters / REUTERS

Mitt Romney holds a town hall meeting at Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville, Ill., on March 17.

But Romney started to pivot toward his general election target -- President Obama -- in his victory remarks on Tuesday evening. He only referenced his Republican challengers so as to congratulate them on a hard-fought campaign. He used the rest of his speech to test themes of his argument against the president.

"This election will be about principle. Our economic freedom will be on the ballot," he said. "I'm running for president because I have the experience and vision to get us out of this mess."

Romney was able to carry momentum into Tuesday's contest resulting from a commanding victory in last Sunday's Puerto Rico primary, which not only won him 20 delegates, but also raised questions about the prudence of Santorum's decision to campaign in the territory -- an expensive commitment which won him no delegates, and only a small share of the popular vote.

Andrea Saul, press secretary for the Romney campaign, previews Tuesday's primary and talks about the delegate tally.

Organizational issues that had dogged Santorum in Ohio's primary also re-appeared in Illinois, where he failed to file the required delegate slates in four congressional districts, meaning he was ineligible to win 10 delegates.

The campaign turns next to Saturday's caucuses in Louisiana. Gingrich, who again vowed to fight onward to Republicans' convention in Tampa this August, spent the day in Louisiana. Santorum also heads next to Louisiana.

The next batch of contests are on April 3 in Wisconsin, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
