New App from Market-Leading eFax? Turns iPad into a Mobile Fax Machine

The WLU faculty members are planning on presenting their research and findings on this subject at the Appalachian Studies Association?s 35th annual conference held at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in March. Their hope is to eventually publish their findings in the Journal of Appalachian Studies.

?For years, public memorials have been studied from geographical and rhetorical perspectives; however, we are not aware of any studies that take an interdisciplinary approach.? says Mr. McCullough. ?I think we are really breaking ground by studying these sites from both geographic and rhetorical perspectives, and I think our visit to these sites were very productive. ScienceDaily (Sep. 16, 2011) ? Two newer drugs used to treat Type 2 diabetes could be linked to a significantly increased risk of developing pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer, and one could also be linked to an increased risk of thyroid cancer, according to a new UCLA study.

Researchers from the Larry L. Hillblom Islet Research Center at UCLA examined the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's database for adverse events reported between 2004 and 2009 among patients using the drugs sitagliptin and exenatide. They found a six-fold increase in the odds ratio for reported cases of pancreatitis with these drugs, compared with four other diabetes therapies they used as controls. They also found that patients who took the two drugs were more likely to have developed pancreatic cancer than those who were treated with the other therapies.

The study is published in the journal Gastroenterology.

"We undertook these studies because several studies in animal models by several investigators had suggested that this form of therapy may have unintended actions to promote growth of the ducts (tubes) in the pancreatic gland that convey digestive juices from the pancreas to the gut," said Dr. Peter Butler, director of the Hillblom Center and a study co-author. "This is a concern if it happens in humans since it might be expected to increase the risk for pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. While the FDA data base has limitations, it does have advantages in being very large, openly accessible and independent from companies that market the drugs.

"Taken together the animals studies and the FDA data base analysis suggest that further work needs to be undertaken to at least rule out that this now widely available new drug class for diabetes does not increase the risk of pancreatic cancer," Butler, who is also a member of UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, added.

Sitagliptin and exenatide are drugs that enhance the actions of a gut hormone known as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which has been shown to be effective in lowering blood sugar in individuals with Type 2 diabetes. Sitagliptin, marketed as Januvia by Merck & Co. Inc., works by inhibiting dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DDP-4), an enzyme that degrades GLP-1. Exenatide, manufactured by Amylin Pharmaceuticals and sold as Byetta, mimics the action of GLP-1 and resists DDP-4 degradation.

Previous research by UCLA Hillblom Center researchers suggested there might be a link between drugs that enhance the actions of GLP-1 and pancreatitis, possibly resulting from an increase in the rate of formation of cells that line the pancreatic ducts. That research, based on studies in rats, was published in 2009 in the journal Diabetes.

In addition to the six-fold increase in reported cases of pancreatitis, the researchers also found a 2.9-fold greater rate of pancreatic cancer in patients using exenatide and a 2.7-fold higher rate of pancreatic cancer in patients on sitagliptin, compared with the other therapies. Additionally, they found a statistically significant increase in the risk of thyroid cancer among the exenatide group, but not among the sitagliptin group.

The FDA data did not indicate links between the two diabetes drugs and any other form of cancer.

The researchers caution that the FDA's adverse events database "is not the ideal mechanism to compare adverse event rates between drugs," given its known limitations, such as incomplete data and reporting biases. They stress that more study is needed.

"Randomized, controlled clinical trials remain the gold standard for such assessment," the researchers wrote.

I had the opportunity to attend an enlightening communications course over the past two days, delivered by John Sutherland. The intent of this blog post is to highlight some of the characteristics of effective written communication that I made notes of and share some of the experiments we, as Rangers, and I, as an individual, are planning for the next few months.

Effective Engineering Writing

The course highlighted the following principles to be considered when creating a piece of information, whereby the italic text are my personal notes I made during the course:

Direct ? start with the eye-of-the-storm, especially when information will be scanned/skimmed on reduced surface area devices, i.e. phones.
Concise ? cut the fluff and include only the important information.
Precise ? include precise information within context, for example submit on 13 August 2013, not some time in August.
Complete? include detailed information within context, for example when reporting an error include details, repro-steps and relevant dumps.
Easily understood ? avoid slang, acronyms and complex language where possible.

Obviously the course delved into many other strategies and concepts, which are best covered in a separate post. The reason I decided to create this post is to highlight a few of the engineering changes we have introduced and my personal objectives that are in support of the above principles.

What are we planning as Visual Studio ALM Rangers?

PatriciaWagner Recent guidance projects have shown a huge improvement in quality and readability, which is primarily thanks to the technical reviews done by one of our Rangers, Patricia (Technical Editor).

The new wave of Ranger solutions are enjoying:

Revised templates, introducing a professional and most importantly a consistent look&feel.
Content scripting by the project leads,to define the skeleton of the guidance and/or out-of-band solution. Expectations are clearer and the team can focus on adding the content.
Technical reviews, ensuring that the principles of effective engineering writing are applied and that the content is correct and compliant.
New infrastructure, which is aimed at PULL, rather than PUSH information strategies. This allows Rangers to define what is important to them and how they want to be alerted of changes. Some of the immediate impact on all Visual Studio ALM Rangers include:

Meeting invites are sent to context specific audience, not to all Rangers, by default.?
If a Ranger wants to be notified of all meetings, an alert must be defined in the? Ranger Meetings list on the Rangers portal.
Project specific collaboration has moved away from email to Discussion Forums on the Rangers portal.
All email, which has been substantially reduced, is based on Controlled Vocab which allows Rangers to defined complex email rules.

What am I planning as an individual?

I have set myself two personal goals:

Crisp, terse and quality documentation and email communication
- revise, revise and revise again
- structure content around a maximum of seven points and avoid scrolling emails
Reduce volume of email communication.
I am aiming for an initial daily cap of 13 new email threads per day, excluding REplies and ForWards. Note that 13 is my lucky number, not a scientifically based number and merely a kick-start limit.

For example, every time I start a new email, I am now confronted with the following hints:

Context? first?
Instructions included?
Action items / owners clear?
Note: Direct|Concise|Precise|Complete|Easily Understood| No Assumptions
Question: im, forum or phone possible instead?

After I have clicked send, I have a further 30 minutes to think about it, stop and edit the email. After the 30minutes, the email leaves my outbox and in many cases the typos and other ineffective communication gremlins are noticed ? but, hopefully the regret of clicking send and the resultant waves will be drastically reduced

NEW YORK?? President John F. Kennedy had just one critique when he saw photos of the actor set to play him in a World War II drama.

The year was 1963 and actor Cliff Robertson looked convincing in his costume for "PT-109," the first film to portray a sitting president. Kennedy had favored Robertson for the role, but one detail was off.

Robertson's hair was parted on the wrong side.

The actor dutifully trained his locks to part on the left and won praise for a role he'd remain proud of throughout his life.

Robertson, who went on to win an Oscar for his portrayal of a mentally disabled man in "Charly", died of natural causes Saturday afternoon in Stony Brook, a day after his 88th birthday, according to Evelyn Christel, his secretary of 53 years.

Robertson never elevated into the top ranks of leading men, but he remained a popular actor from the mid-1950s into the following century. His later roles included kindly Uncle Ben in the "Spider-Man" movies.

He also gained attention for his second marriage to actress and heiress Dina Merrill, daughter of financier E.F. Hutton and Marjorie Merriweather Post, heiress to the Post cereal fortune and one of the world's richest women.

His triumph came in 1968 with his Academy Award performance in "Charly," as a mentally disabled man who undergoes medical treatment that makes him a genius ? until a poignant regression to his former state.

"My father was a loving father, devoted friend, dedicated professional and honorable man," daughter Stephanie Saunders said in a statement. "He stood by his family, friends, and colleagues through good times and bad. He made a difference in all our lives and made our world a better place. We will all miss him terribly."

Robertson had created a string of impressive performances in television and on Broadway, but always saw his role played in films by bigger names. His TV performances in "Days of Wine and Roses" and "The Hustler," for example, were filmed with Jack Lemmon and Paul Newman, respectively. Robertson's role in Tennessee Williams' play "Orpheus Descending" was awarded to Marlon Brando in the movie.

Robertson first appeared in the "Charly" story in a TV version, "The Two Worlds of Charlie Gordon." Both were based on "Flowers for Algernon," a short story that author Daniel Keyes later revised into a novel. Robertson was determined that this time the big-screen role would not go to another actor.

"I bought the movie rights to the show, and I tried for eight years to persuade a studio to make it," he said in 1968. "Finally I found a new company, ABC Films. I owned 50 percent of the gross, but I gave half of it to Ralph Nelson to direct."

Critic Roger Ebert called Robertson's portrayal "a sensitive, believable one." The motion picture academy agreed, though Robertson was unable to get a break from an overseas movie shoot and was not on hand when his Oscar was announced.

Portraying Kennedy in "PT-109," presented other challenges. The president warned Robertson he didn't want someone trying to imitate his distinctive New England accent.

"That was fine with me," the actor commented in 1963. "I think it would have been a mistake for me to say 'Hahvahd' or try to reproduce gestures. Then the audience would have been constantly aware that an actor was impersonating the president."

He added that the film obviously couldn't be done with heroics, "like Errol Flynn gunning down 30 of the enemy. This young naval officer just does things because they have to be done."

"PT-109" was plagued with problems from the start: script changes, switch of directors, bad weather, snakes and mosquitoes in the Florida Keys where it was filmed.

The troubles were evident on the screen, and critics roundly rapped the film, although Robertson's work won praise.

In 1977, Robertson made the headlines again, this time by blowing the whistle on a Hollywood financial scandal.

He had discovered that David Begelman, president of Columbia Pictures, had forged his signature on a $10,000 salary check, and he called the FBI and the Burbank and Beverly Hills police departments. Hollywood insiders were not happy with the ugly publicity.

"I got phone calls from powerful people who said, 'You've been very fortunate in this business; I'm sure you wouldn't want all this to come to an end,'" Robertson recalled in 1984.

Begelman served time for embezzlement, but he returned to the film business. He committed suicide in 1995.

Robertson said neither the studios nor the networks would hire him for four years.

He supported himself as a spokesman for AT&T until the drought ended in 1981 when he was hired by MGM for "Brainstorm," Natalie Wood's final film.

Born Sept. 9, 1923, in La Jolla, Calif., Robertson was 2 when he was adopted by wealthy parents who named him Clifford Parker Robertson III. After his parents divorced and his mother died, he was reared by his maternal grandmother, whom he adored.

Robertson studied briefly at Antioch College, majoring in journalism, then returned to California and appeared in two small roles in Hollywood movies. Rejected by the services in World War II because of a weak eye, he served in the Merchant Marine.

He set his sights on New York theater, and like dozens of other future stars, profited from the advent of live television drama. His Broadway roles also attracted notice, and after avoiding Hollywood offers for several years, he accepted a contract at Columbia Pictures.

"I think I held the record for the number of times I was on suspension," he remarked in 1969. "I remember once I turned down a B picture, telling the boss, Harry Cohn, I would rather take a suspension. He shouted at me, 'Kid, ya got more guts than brains.' I think old Harry might have been right."

Robertson's first performance for Columbia, "Picnic," was impressive, even though his screen pal, William Holden, stole the girl, Kim Novak. He followed with a tearjerker, "Autumn Leaves," as Joan Crawford's young husband, then a musical, "The Girl Most Likely" with Jane Powell. In 1959, he endeared himself to "Gidget" fans as The Big Kahuna, the mature Malibu surf bum who takes Gidget under his wing.

He remained a busy, versatile leading man through the '60s and '70s, but lacked the intensity of Brando, James Dean and others who brought a new style of acting to the screen.

"I'm not one of the Golden Six," he commented in 1967, referring to the top male stars of that day. "I take what's left over."

"They all know me as a great utility player. 'Good old Cliff,' they say. Someday I'd like to be in there as the starting pitcher."

The chance came with "Charly," but after the usual Oscar flurry, he resumed his utility position.
Robertson had the most success in war movies. His strong presence made him ideal for such films as "The Naked and the Dead," "Battle of Coral Sea," "633 Squadron," "Up From the Beach," "The Devil's Brigade," "Too Late the Hero" and "Midway."

He had a passion for flying, and he poured his movie earnings into buying and restoring World War I and II planes. He even entered balloon races, including one in 1964 from the mainland to Catalina Island that ended with him being rescued from the Pacific Ocean.

In 1957, Robertson married Lemmon's ex-wife, Cynthia Stone, and they had a daughter, Stephanie, before splitting in 1960. In 1966, he married Merrill and they had a daughter, Heather. The couple divorced in 1989.

Robertson's funeral is set for Friday in East Hampton.

MARSEILLE, France (AP) ? Germany put forth its deputy finance minister Joerg Asmussen to join the European Central Bank's six-member executive board, and said it and France would propose major governing reforms this week for the 17-nation eurozone.

The two announcements, made Saturday on the sidelines of Group of Seven developed nations' meeting in Marseille, France, could have a lasting impact on the way the currency union handles its crippling government debt crisis.

If Asmussen gets approval from the other 16 euro nations, he will succeed Juergen Stark on the ECB's six-member executive board at the end of the year, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said.

Stark unexpectedly resigned from the board Friday in a move analysts said was triggered by disagreements over the ECB's bond buying program to stabilize interest rates for struggling nations Italy and Spain. The announcement of Stark's departure sent stocks and the euro tumbling, as it raised only more questions over the eurozone's crisis strategy.

Stark was one of only a handful of ECB decision makers who opposed the bank's massive purchases of Italian and Spanish government bonds in recent weeks.

Supporters of the purchases argue that they helped to support struggling governments during unwarranted market selloffs and buy time for the eurozone to find a more lasting solution to its debt troubles. But opponents like Stark have warned that they saddle the central bank with risky investments that could hurt its independence and stability if one of the aided governments defaults.

Asmussen, who sat next to Schaeuble at the news conference, declined to comment on whether he supports the ECB's bond purchases.

Unlike Schaeuble, Asmussen is a member of the opposition Social Democrats and survived the 2009 handover of the German finance ministry to the conservatives because of his experience in European and financial policy. He had joined the ministry in 1996 and quickly rose through the ranks. Generally, the Social Democrats support loser monetary policy and more help for the eurozone's weaker members.

However, like the current Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann, Asmussen studied under former Bundesbank President Axel Weber ? both forceful opponents of the ECB's bond buying program.

At the same news conference, Schaeuble also said he and French Finance Minister Francois Baroin plan to make new proposals on eurozone governing at a meeting with their counterparts Thursday in Wroclaw, Poland.

The governance of the eurozone, especially on fiscal and economic issues, has moved into the center of the debate over Europe's government debt crisis. So far Greece, Ireland and Portugal have needed hundreds of billions of euros in rescue loans, and investors are now deeply concerned over the finances of much larger eurozone members Spain and Italy.

Schaeuble did not elaborate on his plans. However, last month, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy called for a "new economic government" for Europe.

Under that new regime, eurozone leaders would meet at least twice a year under European Union President Herman Van Rompuy. Merkel and Sarkozy also called for all eurozone nations to enact constitutional amendments requiring balanced budgets.

Both leaders have ruled out so-called eurobonds ? debt secured by all 17 euro countries ? which many analysts tout as the quickest fix to continuing market concerns over the solvency of the eurozone's weaker members.

But in an interview with German daily Tagesspiegel, Merkel said the European Union should not shy away from changing its treaty to create closer coordination of fiscal and economic policies. She added, however, that was part of a longer-term strategy and that the currency union should first work within its existing treaty.

Changing the EU treaty could take years, since it requires unanimous approval from all member states at a time when many are growing more euro-skeptic. Yet a growing number of economists and policymakers are arguing that a closer union is the only way to ensure the euro's survival.

Asmussen's imminent departure from the Germany finance ministry will also affect the Eurogroup Working Group, high-level officials who prepare most of the decisions in the eurozone. The group will lose one of its most experienced members just as the currency union is preparing for an unprecedented shake-up.

"Stark's replacement with Asmussen might open space for a more reasonable discussion on further bond purchases by the ECB or the introduction of eurobonds, both of which could help stem the crisis," said Sony Kapoor, managing director of Re-Define, a think tank that supports financial market reform. "It will, however, create a gap at the German finance ministry, which has lost some senior figures in the past year."

If Asmussen's move to the ECB is approved, he will be the second influential German government official to take on a key role in European monetary policymaking this year. Bundesbank chief Weidmann was Merkel's top economic adviser until his appointment in May, raising some questions about the institution's touted independence. However, since then, Weidmann has been critical of government positions on several occasions.

Proposing Asmussen for the ECB post "was probably hardest for me," Schaeuble said. "We have a lot to do. We urgently need him."
