?

Dear Mr. Fisher:

We are writing regarding your column that appeared in the Darien Times on May 17, 2012, where you state that WWE is a product ?barely above pornography.?

Although this was an opinion piece, your position as editor of the Darien Times would ethically require you to report the facts accurately and not distort the truth. For future editorials and news stories that may pertain to WWE, we wanted you to be aware of the facts so you clearly understand our programming content and the type of entertainment we provide to our more than 300,000 fans in the state of Connecticut and millions around the world.

All WWE television programming features only TV-PG content as rated not by us, but by the network TV distributors and their standards and practices departments. WWE weekly programming has always appeared on basic cable or broadcast television. As any casual television viewer knows, your description of our programming, based on the Federal Communications Commission rules alone, would not be permitted on broadcast television or basic cable.

WWE is family entertainment. In fact, 40 percent of the millions of fans who attend our live events bring their children. It?s insulting to these parents to think that they would condone their children watching inappropriate content. WWE may not be your personal choice of entertainment, but that does not give you the right to damage our corporate reputation.

On behalf of WWE, its 690 employees and our fans in Connecticut, we would appreciate it if you would stick to factual statements about our organization and brand. Editorial: McMahon vs. Shays; money vs. victory

Darien Times (Online)

By Joshua Fisher

http://www.darientimes.com/opinion/editorials/5003169-editorial-mcmahon-vs-shays-money-vs-victory.html

Connecticut Republicans will gather in Hartford Friday to nominate their candidate for U.S. Senate. And for the first time in a generation, the GOP actually has a shot to win. But instead, many party leaders appear ready to proudly back money (by calling it ?business sense?) over experience (by calling it ?the old way.?)

Linda McMahon has been gathering up town committee and Connecticut Republican endorsements all over the state. Including endorsements from Darien?s first selectman and RTC chairman. Some are saying the former WWE CEO has the experience to create jobs in Connecticut ? something the U.S. Senate has little influence on. And even if you look past McMahon?s history of creating jobs by peddling a product that is barely above pornography, her ideas and platform are weak and her chances of actually winning the general election in November are even weaker.

Chris Shays on the other hand may be a longtime politician. But he?s been the anti-politician who just happened to serve in Congress for two decades. He made a career out of taking unpopular stands, working in bipartisan ways and bucking his own party ? which may be why many in the GOP are backing McMahon. Chris Shays is a true Connecticut Yankee. He?s fiscally conservative ? and has an actual record to show it.

Two years ago, Connecticut Republicans picked McMahon?s hefty pocketbook over a Republican with a chance to win. This time, they have the chance to nominate a man who not only appeals to independent voters, but a chance to put the state Republican party back in the game. And while no matter who gets the convention?s endorsement this weekend, the loser has vowed to primary this summer, the party has chance to send a message that it actually wants to start winning again instead of whining.

And there?s this: A vote for Linda McMahon is a guarantee that Democrat Chris Murphy will hold Connecticut?s junior U.S. Senate seat as long as he wants it.

Taliban, Afghan neighbors could hamper NATO's exit

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The NATO summit's plan to "responsibly wind down" the Afghan war is not entirely in the hands of President Barack Obama and his fellow world leaders.

The carefully orchestrated exit strategy could come unhinged if the resilient Taliban stage a major comeback or Afghanistan's neighbors interfere with the process to bolster their position in a weak country soon to be without thousands of international combat troops.

In short, the Taliban, Pakistan and Iran still get a vote.

The Taliban, who continue to carry out attacks across the country and have shown little interest in negotiating peace with the Afghan government, described the NATO summit as a "show" with "no result."

"Nobody can trust their statements and lies," Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in an e-mail to the media on Tuesday, a day after the two-day summit closed in Chicago. "They are claiming that everything is fine in Afghanistan, which is far from the reality."

At the summit, the U.S.-led NATO coalition finalized its plan for Afghan forces to take the lead in providing security in the middle of next year. Foreign troops will move into backup support and training roles, then completely end their combat mission at the close of 2014. The goal is to pull back gradually to avoid a repeat of the civil war that followed the Soviet exit two decades ago ? chaos that paved the way for the rise of al-Qaida and the Taliban.

Ivo Daalder, the U.S. permanent representative to NATO, said Tuesday on a conference call with reporters that the U.S. has been paying close attention to the role of Iran and particularly Pakistan in the transition strategy for Afghanistan.

"We are in a very active and in-depth set of dialogues with Pakistan to find ways in which we can cooperate to deal with the problems that exist in order to make sure that our strategy in Afghanistan will succeed," Daalder said. "That's why we have and will continue to find ways to cooperate on dealing with the terrorists."

Pakistan has said repeatedly that it wants a stable Afghanistan, and the U.S. has given that country billions of dollars in aid over the past decade to enlist its support in fighting Islamist militants. But U.S. officials also have accused Pakistan of being a fickle ally and even supporting Taliban insurgents fighting the American troops in Afghanistan. Pakistan has denied this allegation.

Last year, then-Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen said the Haqqani network, which is affiliated with the Taliban and al-Qaida, "acts as a veritable arm" of Pakistan's intelligence agency. Mullen accused the network last year of staging an attack against the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters in Kabul and being behind a truck bombing that wounded 77 American soldiers. He claimed Pakistan's spy agency helped the group.

Still, both Afghanistan and the U.S. need Pakistan's help to negotiate a peace agreement with the Taliban.

"It is in Pakistan's interest to work with us and the world community to ensure that they themselves are not consumed by extremism that is in their midst," Obama said in Chicago.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai met with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on the sidelines of the summit. The main subject was Pakistan's role in the peace process. Karzai's office said in a statement that Zardari invited the head of the Afghan peace process to Pakistan to discuss the issue.

Pakistan is not a NATO member but was invited to the summit because of its influence in Afghanistan and its role until last year as the major supply route to landlocked NATO forces there. Pakistan closed those routes after a U.S. attack on the Pakistani side of the border killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in November. The routes remain closed because of a dispute over how much the U.S. will pay Pakistan to allow each truck to drive across its territory.

Iran also has the ability to complicate NATO's plans. Iran does not like the U.S. military footprint on its eastern border and will be closely watching negotiations on a U.S.-Afghan security agreement that will define the size and parameters of an American military presence in Afghanistan in the years to come.

Although the Iranians are cozier with Afghanistan's ethnic Hazara than with the majority Pashtuns who fill the ranks of the Taliban, NATO has accused Iran of providing the Taliban with weapons used against coalition forces.

Last year, NATO forces seized 48 Iranian-made rockets that officials said were intended to aid the Taliban. NATO officials said the shipment was evidence of a serious escalation in Iran's state support of the Taliban ? an allegation Tehran denied. Western officials accuse Iran of conducting a proxy war against the U.S., which is in a standoff with Tehran over its nuclear program.

For now, Afghans are taking a wait-and-see approach to the summit's upbeat assessment of their future.

"We have witnessed a lot of international conferences on Afghanistan ? conference after conference after conference," said Mohammad Qassim Zazai, a businessman from Paktia province who is living in Kabul. "The people say 'Let's see what's going to happen on the ground.'"

Abdul Khaliq Bala Karzai, a parliament member, said he was pleased that world leaders expressed their commitment to Afghanistan even as they are pulling out their troops.

"I was watching on TV and they said they are going to protect Afghanistan and the Afghan people. Security is like water ? very vital," said the lawmaker from Kandahar province, the birthplace of the insurgency.

The world leaders now need to pressure Iran and Pakistan to cooperate, not interfere, in Afghanistan, he said.

"For the time being, the Taliban are not able to fight on the ground against the Afghan and foreign troops. They are able only to launch guerrilla attacks, plant mines and carry out suicide attacks," he said. "When the foreign troops leave, the Taliban will get stronger, especially if these two countries support them ? give them weapons and sanctuary, which is going on now."

Mawlana Farid, a political analyst in Kabul, said he also was heartened to hear the international community's strong support going forward.

"The world leaders in Chicago announced their unity in protecting Afghanistan, but we still have concerns about our neighbors ? Pakistan and Iran," he said.

Even in front of 60 world leaders, Pakistan was not willing to open up its borders to allow NATO convoys to move through its territory, he lamented.

"These convoys are the ones being used to help fight the terrorism. Pakistan is not ready to cooperate," Farid said. "Pakistan needs to give their word to the international community that they will not support insurgents or terrorism. If not, the situation could get worse."

The Definition: I Opened a Dove Chocolate - Mazurkhilde's blog

yesterday and it said "You are right where you are supposed to be!" ?So when did the chocolate company start tracking people?

I am going to take it at face value and say they are right. Silly little sign I know but hey a girl has to hold on to all those little strands of hope.

So I was thinking about how I am spending this day off. ?I woke up about 7 and just chilled in the bed for a couple hours. ?I finished the movie Pursuit of Happyness and in a way it was motivational. In another way, I found it sad. ?The thing that was his true motivation was his son, I used to relate to that but mine is grown now.lol. Anyway it was a good movie. ?I shall continue to search for my happiness in this world.

So after that, I decided I need to embrace my new home with more?enthusiasm. ?A little decorating always helps. ?So off to kohls to use that dang $10 cash back before it expires today. ?Two area rugs, a?tension?bar and a set of curtains and the place looks totally different. ?I was also motivated to clean out a couple of those catch all nooks. ?I still need to paint my little closet but I haven' decided on the color yet.

While on the roll of pride in ownership, I also washed it for the first time since I got it.

Now I am having a late leisurely lunch at a burger joint and soaking in the AC. ?I was going to the movie but everything at the place i have my groupon is sci-fi-ish and I just am not in the mood for that. ?Right now I don't want to pay for a movie at a different facility.

The temp will start dropping in a couple hours and I still need to go to the gym. ?I will be glad when my self improvement motivation kicks back in. ?Right now I am just swimming and showering there. ?You will know when I get past the depression when I start taking care of myself. ?Just not there yet.

I am not sure what the night holds yet. ?Probably a movie in the van. ?I have picked up another shift for tomorrow with little guy but don't go in until noon. ?That will be strange.

So for now this is life. ?It isn't bad by any means. ?I actually like this lifestyle. ?I just need to learn to chillax and eat slower. ?Actually, do everything slower. ?It is such a more relaxed pace that it is hard to adapt at times. ?But for now, for me, it is good.

Debt Consolidation: That Much Needed Relief for Debtors

Sound financial management does not only belong to the sphere of business. It is an important concern which should be of personal interest to everyone; that is most everybody who wants to sleep soundly at night. Although most people are aware of its importance in their lives, not all are avid practitioners of it.

The problem may lie in the temptations provided by the modern world which encourage unabated consumption. The word "moderation" may seem alien to a number of people who may even struggle to make both ends meet. Business needs consumers--a lot of them--and there are many willing bodies to provide them with profit.

People earn money by working, but sometimes what they earn is not enough to give them satisfaction. In the process, they incur debts which make them crave for more and dig deeper into their debt hole. Unfortunately, some people do not just buy what they need, which their earnings may cover, they rather buy what they want--and usually don't need--which they may not be able to afford.

Debts may come in the form of personal loans, house or car mortgage, and credit cards, among many other sources. If you have all kinds of debts and paying them seems impossible based on your earnings, you may find yourself in a difficult situation. However, it is not a hopeless condition. There are many ways with which you can extricate yourself from the quagmire of debt.

For example, South Carolina debt consolidation services offered by some companies may provide you with some relief. These companies are particularly concerned with mortgages for your home financing needs. This loan usually provides the largest single source of debt for most people which can cause them to lose their homes.

Companies offering debt consolidation in South Carolina can help in your refinancing needs for more manageable mortgage payments. It could be helpful to provide you with better terms of payment and interest rates. You can avoid the late fees, extra charges, and bad credit that result from non-payment of many debts.

Most companies that provide debt consolidation South Carolina offer interest rate reduction and restructuring of your debt payment plan. They can also provide you with a single monthly payment with the consolidation of your debts. The plan can also eliminate late fees and bring you out of debt faster. More importantly, debt consolidation can improve your credit history. Being in debt may not be good, but it is not the end of the world if you know where to find help. Still Confused By The Facebook IPO? Here's A ... - Business Insider

NEW YORK (AP) ? A company started in a Harvard dorm room in 2004 has just raised $16 billion and is valued at $104 billion. All that from an initial public offering of stock.

But taking a company public isn't as simple as clicking on "like." Even for Facebook.

When the social media company's stock starts trading Friday under the symbol FB, buyer demand is expected to explode. At its initial offering price of $38 a share, the 8-year-old upstart is now worth more than established heavyweights Disney and Kraft.

The nearly $16 billion raised in the IPO will flow to the company and its early investors.

As with any initial offering, Facebook's IPO follows lots of negotiation ? over price, paperwork, selling and buying. Here are some questions and answers about its public debut:

Q: So why is Facebook going public?

A: The same reason many other fast-growing companies do: to raise money. Selling stock to the public gives companies money to run their businesses, expand and buy other companies. Sometimes companies go public even if they have no plans for the money. Facebook says it wants to establish a public market for its shares in case it needs to raise money from investors in the future.

Q: What happens in an IPO?

A: The company sells ownership stakes to the public for the first time. Facebook plans to sell up to 421 million shares. That represents a 15 percent stake in the company. The sale is expected to raise $16 billion.

Q: Who owns shares of Facebook now?

A: Well-connected investors, employees and top insiders like company directors. They are selling 241 million shares, or more than half the total being sold. The company has said it's selling shares at $38 each. At that price, those early owners will pocket $9 billion, or an average of $230 million each. The company will get $7 billion.

Q: Who will buy the shares?

A: In an IPO, there are two buyers. The first are the investment banks that helped the company file IPO documents with regulators and contacted pension funds, mutual funds and other big institutions to gauge a price for the shares. These investment banks are called underwriters. In Facebook's case, 33 banks are helping out; Morgan Stanley has the lead role. The underwriters guarantee to the company that they'll buy all of the shares at the IPO price.

Q: When do the underwriters buy the shares?

A: Before shares start trading publicly. Facebook's underwriters were expected to buy all the sellers' shares Thursday night. But first, the underwriters had to negotiate a price with a second group of buyers ? the institutions that will buy the shares from them. They did that Thursday night, settling on a price of $38. In a document filed with regulators this week, Facebook had estimated that the price would be between $34 and $38.

Q: Is this negotiated price the IPO price?

A: Yes. But that's not what the underwriters pay the company and insiders. After settling on an IPO price, the underwriters subtract a commission for their work. With big IPOs like Facebook's, that's typically 3 percent. At $38, that would mean Morgan Stanley and the other Facebook underwriters would get $1.14 off for each share. They'd pay $36.86 a share. Underwriters have five days to transfer the money to the company and other sellers.

Q: What do the underwriters do with their shares?

A: They sell them to big institutions, along with some favored individual investors, before public trading starts. They do this usually the night before. In Facebook's case, all of the underwriters' shares are expected to be sold by Friday morning before the stock exchanges open at 9:30 a.m. in New York.

Q: Is that when trading of Facebook begins?

A: No. The new owners who want to sell their Facebook shares must call their traders first. The traders will call "market makers" at the Nasdaq stock market, where Facebook's shares will be listed. Market makers are firms that agree to hold shares in a company so buyers and sellers can easily trade them. The market makers negotiate among themselves to find a price between what most buyers and sellers are demanding. That can take up to two hours, after which the first Facebook shares will exchange hands. The price will appear under the symbol FB.

Q: I read that Facebook will be worth more than $100 billion after the IPO. What does that mean?

This is the so-called market value of the company. It's what investors trading a portion of its shares think the whole company would be worth if all its shares were trading. At $38 per share, Facebook would be worth $104 billion.

Q: Who are the early investors who are selling?

A: One of the biggest is DST Global Ltd., a London firm founded by Russian investor Yuri Milner that first invested in Facebook in 2009. DST and its affiliates plan to sell 45.7 million shares. At $38, Milner's firm would get $1.74 billion. One of the earliest investors, Reid Hoffman, a co-founder of LinkedIn Corp. who put money into Facebook in 2004, is expected to sell stock worth up to $36 million. Other sellers include Goldman Sachs, which invested last year. It expects to get as much as $1.1 billion for its shares.

Q: What about Mark Zuckerberg?

The Facebook CEO plans to sell 30.2 million shares. He would pocket up to $1.15 billion. Part of Zuckerberg's holdings include special shares that give him voting rights on shareholder proposals. After the IPO, he will control 56 percent of votes.

Q: Where will the Facebook IPO rank among IPOs?

A: In terms of money raised, it will be the third-biggest U.S. IPO in history, edging out AT&T Wireless. That company's IPO in 2000 raised $10.6 billion according to Renaissance Capital, an IPO advisory firm. The biggest IPO was Visa Inc. in 2008. It raised $17.8 billion.

$16B Should Cover It: Here?s The $15B Facebook Privacy Class Action Suit, And Facebook?s Response

facebook-privacy-1Facebook, which has now listed on NASDAQ, is set to make $16 billion if its share holds at the $38 price that it set yesterday -- more if it ends higher. Here's a coincidence: that's just north of the total amount in damages, $15 billion, that a new class-action case is seeking against the social network over privacy invasion. Filed in U.S. Federal Court in San Jose, California, the case (embedded below)?combines 21 separate cases that have been filed in different courts in the U.S. in 2011 and 2012 -- as the plaintiffs look for strength in numbers. All of the cases are connected to "Internet tracking," or how Facebook tracks users when they are browsing the wider web outside of Facebook's own pages, even after they have logged out of Facebook. Facebook has already responded to the case with a flat statement of denial of guilt. "We believe this complaint is without merit and we will fight it vigorously," a spokesperson told TechCrunch.

GSK melanoma drug shows promise in early trial

LONDON (Reuters) - An experimental cancer drug developed by Britain's GlaxoSmithKline may add vital months to the lives of melanoma patients whose disease has spread to their brains, according to data from an early-stage trial published on Friday.

Results of Phase I trial published in The Lancet medical journal showed substantial shrinking of tumors in patients treated with the drug, dabrafenib, and showed promise against secondary melanoma tumors, or metastases, in the brain.

Dabrafenib blocks the activity of a cancer-causing mutated form of a gene known as BRAF, which is found in about half of melanoma cases.

Results released on Wednesday from a separate trial looking at dabrafenib in combination with another GSK drug, trametinib, were also positive.

Researchers said the results of the dabrafenib-only trial, although early-stage, represented an important step forward in the treatment of this deadly cancer.

Melanoma is diagnosed in nearly 160,000 people worldwide each year. It can spread quickly to internal organs and average survival is six to nine months.

Georgina Long of the Melanoma Institute Australia and Westmead Hospital in Sydney, and Gerald Falchook from the University of Texas in the United States, treated 184 patients with dabrafenib in a Phase I trial -- the earliest step of the drug development process in humans.

They said some of the most exciting results came from a subset of 10 patients whose tumors had spread to their brains.

None of these had previously received treatment for their brain tumors. However, the brain metastases disappeared in four of the patients when they were treated with 150 milligrams of dabrafenib twice daily.

Five patients saw their brain metastases shrink, and one had stable disease, where the tumors remained the same size.

"The results in the brain were remarkable," Long said. "I don't think there is a single other systemic agent that is as active in the brain."

Experts not involved in the trial also said the drug showed promise.

In a commentary piece in The Lancet, Geoffrey Gibney and Vernon Sondak from the H Lee Moffit Cancer Center and Research Institute in the U.S. described the results as "impressive" and "encouraging".

Long and Falchook said it was not clear why the drug was so effective in the brain where other drugs have failed, but further trials are under way to try to clarify the mechanism.

"The big message is that the brain, with this drug, is just like another organ," Long said. "If you are going to respond in your lung and liver, you tend to respond in your brain as well."

Unfortunately, for most of the patients with brain metastases, the response to the drug was limited to several months.

Long said, however, these few months of extension of life were very rare in patients with melanoma that has spread to the brain. Normally, such patients can only expect to survive for four months from the point of diagnosis, she said.

"With this drug, these patients had no progression of their disease for a median of 4.2 months. Without treatment, many of them might already have died at that point," she said.

Two of the 10 brain metastasis patients who received the drug survived for more than 12 months. One was still alive and receiving the drug at 19 months.

Family Activity: Treasures in the Sand : Ideas for Women Home and ...

When the weather turns hot and the kids are out of school some days you are left unsure how to entertain them. One tried and true method around our house is Treasures in the Sand. It is a version of a game I played as a child.? It is very simple to play, you take a small child-sized pool, fill it up with sand and then put any sort of small treasures in it.

My kids love the archeologist version of it the best.? I bury pieces of pottery and other such toy items (sometimes dinosaurs) and then they hunt for them. They spend time cataloging each item, discussing it, and sorts of things. Since we live in Georgia and it gets pretty hot, they say it?s like being in Egypt.? Use your imagination and just go wild with it, although a word of caution; I put a screen and tarp over the sand to keep any creepy crawly things out and it allows us to use the sand all summer long.? When all of nieces and nephews are here we throw pennies in and they race to see who can find the most.

POLITICS CHATTER: The blame game. Pondering news in an era ...

Ottawa Magazine contributing editor Mark Bourrie accuses North ?North American newspapers of being scared of their own shadows.?

Imagine you worked with a guy ? let?s call him Johnny ? who took the blame for every mistake made by everyone in your business or office.

The business isn?t making any money? Don?t blame the CEO. Blame Johnny.

The staff?s become moribund and lazy? Blame Johnny. No one?s come up with a new marketing idea in three decades? Johnny will take the blame.

So your business jacks up its prices and makes a lousier product every year? No one gets fired. Just point your thumb over your shoulder at Johnny.

Managers only hire their pals, or pals of pals ? real slow learners and fools ? and your industry becomes a laughing stock. Damn that Johnny.

Wouldn?t it be great to have Johnny around to take the blame for every bad decision, every screw-up, every lousy management decision? No matter what you did wrong, you?d always been in the clear. And if, the odd time, something went right, you took the credit. Johnny?s only there for the blame.

Well, you?re looking at the modern newspaper business. Johnny is the Internet.

Last week, 25 staffers of PostMedia news service got canned by the same people who decided that a national news agency to compete with Canadian Press was a good idea. The reporters, most of them bright kids just out of school, got two whole weeks? severance pay before being turned loose into a job market that doesn?t want them.

People in the business pointed all kinds of fingers. My own Facebook page had a fascinating discussion involving a former National Post editor and some good journalists about the quality of media management in this country.

I bring this up because I?m writing a biography of George McCullagh, founder of The Globe and Mail. His story is a lesson for Canada?s tribe of numbskull newsroom managers and journalism prrofs, if any of them deigned to read a book.

George McCullagh was born poor in London, Ontario, in 1905. At the age of 20, he was a high school drop-out and a Globe financial reporter. He quit four years later, in the summer of 1929, and went to work on the stock exchange. Market collapse, schmarket collapse: by 1935, McCullagh had a staff of 40 and the financial clout to by the Globe. A few weeks later, he bought the Mail and Empire and cobbled them together into The Globe and Mail.

McCullagh had many, many faults but, like Conrad Black, he loved newspapers. In the middle of the Depression, when publishers were using the economy to cut staff, McCullagh was hiring, building a state-of-the-art headquarters and a company plane. The Globe and Mail had reporters everywhere. It dictated the political agenda of Ontario and Canada.

McCullagh had started off as a newspaper salesman at 16. He had walked the back-roads of rural Ontario selling subscriptions to farmers. In 1989, The Globe and Mail literally threw these readers away. It wanted hip, urban, wealthy readers. The modern Globe would never hire a guy like George McCullagh.

Yet George McCullagh ran newspapers that made money. In 1947, at the age of 42, he bought the Toronto Telegram and plunged it into a head-to-head battle with the Toronto Star.

George McCullagh liked to hobnob with powerful people but, unlike most media managers today, he preferred story-telling to social climbing. McCullagh went after the federal government over its World War II censorship policies when raising the issue invited charges of subversion. He fought to get rid of provincial governments, calling them narrow and divisive. He tried to start a national movement to break the back of political patronage.

He had some really odd ideas. He thought political parties should be abolished and, for a few weeks in 1938 that a lot of politicians later wanted to forget, he talked the Ontario Liberals and Tories into agreeing.

He also thought he should be able to buy hour-long blocks of time on the national radio network of the CBC to share his ideas with everyone in the country. When Mackenzie King?s cabinet and the CBC turned him down, McCullagh used the pages of his newspapers to wage war against them.

A George McCullagh running a Canadian newspaper, or newspaper company, is unimaginable now. Not because of the nutty ideas, but because North American newspapers are scared of their own shadows. They?re run either by businessmen who are one step ahead of their bankers and or faceless entities like telephone companies and pension funds. The formula today relies completely on predictability and the rather weird business model of giving news away today and trying to sell the same news tomorrow.

If McCullagh was alive, he?d draw the same thunderbolts as those hurled at Conrad Black, another eccentric genius loaded with many faults, including hubris, who loves great newspapers.

But McCullagh?s gone. He was pursued by his own demons and killed himself at the age of 47.

The Globe and Mail has no records from George McCullagh?s time as publisher and shows no interest whatever in a biography of him. McCullagh?s papers were burned by his wife. The man who was arguably the country?s best newspaper publisher has been very deliberately erased from history.

I?ll have some faith in the Canadian news industry ? whatever it morphs into ? when it starts to show signs of fight. I think those 25 kids chucked over the side at PostMedia had lots of fight in them and, from what I know of them, I bet George McCullagh would have fought tooth and nail to hang on to them.

But McCullagh never had Johnny to blame. And, as long as people don?t care whether they?re informed, and don?t see the relationship between solid journalism and democracy, we?re going to have the sad-sack news managers who run Canada?s media.

And they?ll always have Johnny. Because without Johnny, they might have to face the wrath of the likes of George McCullagh and Conrad Black.

Why Polio Isn't Going Away (preview)

Feature Articles | Health Cover Image: April 2012 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

As the number of cases of the paralytic disease fall, world health officials have to grapple with a vexing problem: a component of the most widely used polio vaccine now causes more disease than the virus it is supposed to fight

CONTINUED TOLL: Although polio has disappeared from the Western Hemisphere and Europe, the virus still permanently cripples children in Africa and Asia every year. Image: Joao Henriques/Redux Pictures

In Brief

  • The global campaign to eradicate polio began in 1988. Since then, naturally occurring cases worldwide have dropped to, at last count, around 650 in 2011.
  • Completely eliminating polio requires a change in the current vaccination program because one component in the most widely used vaccine now causes more cases of polio than it prevents.
  • The World Health Assembly is expected to approve a plan this May that should decrease the number of vaccine-linked cases of polio and may speed up overall eradication efforts.
  • Yet questions have arisen over the safety of making the change rapidly. If health officials do not manage this transition correctly, polio could continue to cripple children for years to come.

The shadows lengthen in a guesthouse cafeteria on the sprawling campus of christian Medical College, Vellore, in India. Wrapped up as he is in an issue that has possessed him for years, T. Jacob John notices neither the dying light nor the gathering mosquitoes. He is talking about the oral polio vaccine.

A slight man who speaks and moves with a speed that belies his 76 years, John is one of India?s leading polio experts. Trained as a pediatrician, virologist and microbiologist, he is also a longtime critic of the continued reliance on the oral polio vaccine?OPV in polio speak?used by the nearly 25-year-old international campaign to rid the planet of the paralyzing and sometimes fatal disease. The vaccine is at once an excellent and an imperfect tool. Inexpensive and easy to administer (each dose consists of a few drops of serum on the tongue), it has brought the world to the point where polio eradication is visible on the horizon. Indeed, the World Health Organization announced this past January that there have been no cases of naturally occurring polio in India for a year. But if the distribution of the vaccine is not choreographed with exquisite care, its continued use?at least as it is currently formulated?could actually keep the world from eliminating polio.

Kanye West Signs Teyana Taylor To G.O.O.D. Music

The 21-year-old Harlem rapper and singer is officially added to the roster at West's Def Jam imprint.

Well, this was a long time coming. Kanye West has been closely affiliated with Harlem rapper/singer Teyana Taylor for some time now, but this week it was confirmed that Taylor has officially been signed to 'Ye's G.O.O.D. Music label.

The 21-year-old singer-songwriter and actress, who worked with West on his fifth album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, will reveal details about her first G.O.O.D. Music LP and forthcoming singles in the next few weeks. In April she debuted a new mixtape, The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor, which pays tribute to Lauryn Hill and her other early influences, including Mary J. Blige and Janet Jackson.

Taylor got her start in the industry when she was signed to Pharrell William's Star Trak record label at the age of 15, and some fans might remember her over-the-top episode of MTV's "My Super Sweet 16." Her debut album, 2008's From a Planet Called Harlem, featured the breakout single "Google Me," and Taylor has since earned plenty of co-writing credits on recent songs like Nicki Minaj's "Right By My Side," which appeared on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. Taylor worked closely with West on MBDTF's "Hell of a Life," "Runaway," "Dark Fantasy" and the collaboration track "Christmas in Harlem," which also featured G.O.O.D. Music's CyHi the Prynce.

Her recent onscreen endeavors include roles in 2010's "Stomp the Yard 2" and Tyler Perry's 2011 film "Madea's Big Happy Family." Last summer, the 21-year-old also grabbed attention with her remix of Drake's hit single "Marvin's Room." "Her Room" found Taylor sampling lyrics from Lauryn Hill's "X Factor," as she came to terms with a cheating ex.

The G.O.O.D. news just keeps coming from Kanye West's camp. Last month the super producer/rapper signed veteran Q-Tip to his Def Jam imprint.

What do you think of Kanye of signing Teyana to G.O.O.D. Music? Tell us in the comments!

CTIA Wireless 2012 wrap-up

Image

Oh, how we will miss New Orleans. It's been a long and busy week in the Big Easy as tens of thousands of calories were sacrificed in the name of bringing you the most comprehensive coverage of CTIA's annual spring show. Not that we mind -- we love doing it, and it's easy justification for the dozens of beignets we downed during our stay. The event was a tad on the quiet side this year (no companies announced any buyouts, for starters) we still kept ourselves more than adequately busy sticking our noses in every nook and cranny of the show floor. After the break, feast upon our entire scope of coverage, in case you missed it the first time around.

Virgin Media UK to stock the Samsung Galaxy S III 'this summer'

Samsung Galaxy S III

Just when you thought it was safe to step outside, another UK carrier comes forward with plans to stock the Samsung Galaxy S III. We already know the plans of the major carriers, and some of the unlocked SIM-free prices. Step forward Virgin Media though, who have announced their own decision to carry the latest Samsung flagship.

Pricing and availability are yet to be announced, beyond coming "this summer." Where Virgin stand out though, is their range of discounts for customers of their other services like TV and Broadband. Virgin Media customers could potentially be on to a winner with this one, so if you're one of them, it could be worth watching out for.
