LITTLE FALLS, Minn. (AP) ? A Minnesota homeowner who shot two teenagers in the midst of an apparent Thanksgiving Day break-in told authorities he feared they had a weapon.

But Byron David Smith of Little Falls acknowledged in a criminal complaint that he fired "more shots than (he) needed to." Smith also described "a good clean finishing shot" for one teen.

Smith was charged Monday with two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of 18-year-old Haile Kifer and 17-year-old Nicholas Brady.

Holiday shopping season off to record start

NEW YORK (AP) ? If you make holiday shopping convenient, Americans will come in droves.

It's estimated that U.S. shoppers hit stores and websites at record numbers over the Thanksgiving weekend, according to a survey released by the National Retail Federation on Sunday. They were attracted by retailers' efforts to make shopping easier, including opening stores on Thanksgiving evening, updating mobile shopping applications for smartphones and tablets, and expanding shipping and layaway options.

All told, a record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites over the four-day weekend starting on Thanksgiving, up 9.2 percent of last year, according to a survey of 4,000 shoppers that was conducted by research firm BIGinsight for the trade group. Americans spent more too: The average holiday shopper spent $423 over the entire weekend, up from $398 last year. Total spending over the four-day weekend totaled $59.1 billion, up 12.8 percent from 2011.

Caitlyn Maguire, 21, was one of the shoppers that took advantage of all the new conveniences of shopping this year. Maguire, who lives in New York, began buying on Thanksgiving night at Target's East Harlem store. During the two-hour wait in line, she also bought items on her iPhone on Amazon.com. On Friday, she picked up a few toys at Toys R Us. And on Saturday she was out at the stores again.

"I'm basically done," said Maguire, who spent about $400 over the weekend.

The results for the weekend appear to show that retailers' efforts to make shopping effortless for U.S. consumers during the holiday shopping season worked. Retailers upped the ante in order to give Americans more reasons to shop. Stores feared that consumers might not spend because of the weak job market and worries that tax increases and budget cuts will take effect if Congress fails to reach a budget deal by January.

Retailers, which can make up to 40 percent of their annual revenue in November and December, were hoping Thanksgiving openings and other incentives would help boost what's expected to be a difficult holiday shopping season. The National Retail Federation estimates that overall sales in November and December will rise 4.1 percent this year to $586.1 billion. That's more than a percentage point lower than the growth in each of the past two years, and the smallest increase since 2009, when sales were nearly flat.

Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the National Retail Federation, said retailers can be encouraged by the first weekend of the holiday shopping season.

"Retailers and consumers both won this weekend, especially on Thanksgiving," he said.

Here were the trends that emerged over the weekend:

? Online wave: According to comScore, which tracks online spending, online sales rose 26 percent to $1.04 billion on Black Friday compared with a year ago. On Thanksgiving, online sales rose 32 percent from last year to $633 million. And online sales on Black Friday were up 26 percent from the same day last year to $1.042 billion. It was the first time online sales on Black Friday surpassed $1 billion.

? Thanksgiving shopping: Many stores, including Toys R Us and Target, opened on Thanksgiving evening this year. No data is out yet about how much shoppers spent on that day, but it appears that consumers took advantage of the earlier start: According to the National Retail Federation's survey, the number of people who shopped on Thanksgiving rose 23.1 percent. That compares with a 3.1 percent increase for Black Friday.

Linda and James Michaels of Portland, Ore., were among those shopping on Thanksgiving. They hit up the big sales on the day and got everything they were hoping for that night.

They picked up remote control cars and some Mickey Mouse items on sale at Toys R Us. Then they went a few doors down to Target and scored the last Operation game on sale for $7. They were even able to pick up some pajamas and shoes along the way for the kids. In total they spent about $300.

"I felt lucky that I caught the deals and there was no craziness, no fighting," said Linda Michaels. "I was nervous."

ShopperTrak, which analyzes customer traffic at 40,000 U.S. stores, plans to release sales data for Thanksgiving later this week, but the firm is estimating that retailers generated $700 million in sales on the holiday.

? Black Friday flop: It appears that the Thanksgiving openings may have hurt sales on the day after.

Black Friday is still expected to be the biggest shopping day of the year, but sales on that day slipped to $11.2 billion, down 1.8 percent from last year, according to ShopperTrak. That's below ShopperTrak's estimate that Black Friday sales would rise 3.8 percent to $11.4 billion.

Karen MacDonald, a spokeswoman at Taubman Centers, which operates 28 malls across the country, said that Thanksgiving openings hurt business. Based on a sampling of 10 malls, sales growth was unchanged up to mid-single digits on Friday, and unchanged up to low single digit on Saturday.

"It was a different feeling," she said. "It was a good Black Friday, but I don't think it was great."

The disappointing sales on Black Friday may have been the result of shoppers like Miguel Garcia, a 40-year-old office coordinator.

"I can't deal with all that craziness," said Garcia, who was at a Target in the Bronx borough of New York City on Saturday. "Compared to what I saw on TV yesterday, this is so much more comfortable and relaxed. I can actually think straight and compare prices."

4 Creative Divas crafts, hobbies, hairstyles, and more.: Memories ...

All morning I have been thinking of my sweet little grandmas. ?Both of my grandmas passed on quite a while ago. They were both strikingly different, one lived in town and the other lived on a farm. ?I would like to share some stories about them, in a blog series called "Memories",? that are so inspiring and demonstrate how amazing they were. ?Today, I would like to tell you about my "Town Grandma". ? I remember this grandma was an "old grandma", she was born on August ?24, 1879, ?so when I was almost 6 ( just before she passed on) she was in her 70's.? Even though she died just before my 6th birthday it is amazing how much I remember about her. ?Maybe it was?because?she was truly my best friend.?

?This is a picture of my grandma and her 5 sisters. ?My grandma is on the top row on the right.

I want to share a story about her from the early 1900's

The year was 1913, Katie Nye Hodgkinson was a young mother of ?two little boys. ?She and her husband was a happy family living in a small little cabin just off the main road of 500 East in Vernal Utah. ? One day her?husband?Albert?receives a letter from the LDS church headquarters which ask if he would serve a ?two year full-time mission in the eastern states of?Kentucky?and Tennessee. ??Back in those days they served their missions without purse or script. This?meant?that they went without money and very little?previsions,??mainly the cloths on their back. ?While my Grandfather was gone serving his mission. My Grandma lived with her two little boy in her cabin alone. ?She was a very resourceful woman. During that time, she would take in laundry and?ironing?to provide for her little family. ?One evening she was in her cabin getting the boys ready for bed. ?She heard a noise coming from outside, a?screeching? howling sound. She goes to the front door, opens it, in the darkness she could see an object with a long tail running down the road. ?She couldn't tell exactly what it was, but she was very frightened and protective of her two little boys. ? The next morning she heard from her?neighbor, Mr. Sessions, that when he came home the night before he had seen a mountain lion around his house.? This one small story is an example of?strength??and courage to me, ?my grandma (whom I called Gram) had the ability to endure hardship, served others with faith and love, and?endured?to the end with dignity.

Because our heritage is so important to us, we like to display them throughout our home, This is a memory box that my daughter made for a 4-H project. ? She took a preshaped box that you get from the craft store. ?She tore up small pieces of scrapbook paper and Modge-Podged them to the box. ?She also Modge-Podged the picture. ?(It was a picture I?scanned?on to my computer and printed ) Then she ?embellished it with lace. ?She got a purple ribbon at our local county fair and a blue ribbon from the state fair. Do any of you have amazing stories of your ancestors? Leave a comment and tell us about them. We would love to read them.

Beijing's S. China Sea rivals protest passport map

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) ? China has enraged several neighbors with a few dashes on a map, printed in its newly revised passports, that show it staking its claim on the entire South China Sea and even Taiwan.

Inside the new passports, an outline of China printed in the upper left corner includes Taiwan and the sea, hemmed in by the dashes. The change highlights China's longstanding claim on the South China Sea in its entirety, though parts of the waters also are claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Brunei and Malaysia.

China's official maps have long included Taiwan and the South China Sea as Chinese territory, but the act of including those in its passports could be seen as a provocation since it would require other nations to tacitly endorse those claims by affixing their official seals to the documents.

Ruling party and opposition lawmakers alike condemned the map in Taiwan, a self-governed island that split from China after a civil war in 1949. They said it could harm the warming ties the historic rivals have enjoyed since Ma Ying-jeou became president 4 1/2 years ago.

"This is total ignorance of reality and only provokes disputes," said Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, the Cabinet-level body responsible for ties with Beijing. The council said the government cannot accept the map.

Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario told reporters in Manila that he sent a note to the Chinese Embassy that his country "strongly protests" the image. He said China's claims include an area that is "clearly part of the Philippines' territory and maritime domain."

The Vietnamese government said it had also sent a diplomatic note to the Chinese Embassy in Hanoi, demanding that Beijing remove the "erroneous content" printed in the passport.

In Beijing, the Foreign Ministry said the new passport was issued based on international standards. China began issuing new versions of its passports to include electronic chips on May 15, though criticism cropped up only this week.

"The outline map of China on the passport is not directed against any particular country," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Thursday.

It's unclear whether other South China Sea neighbors will respond in any way beyond protesting to Beijing. China, in a territorial dispute with India, once stapled visas into passports to avoid stamping them. Taiwan does not recognize China's passports in any case; Chinese visitors to the island have a special travel document.

China maintains it has ancient claims to all of the South China Sea, despite much of it being within the exclusive economic zones of Southeast Asian neighbors. The islands and waters are potentially rich in oil and gas.

There are concerns that the disputes could escalate into violence. China and the Philippines had a tense maritime standoff at a shoal west of the main Philippine island of Luzon early this year.

The United States, which has said it takes no sides in the territorial spats but that it considers ensuring safe maritime traffic in the waters to be in its national interest, has backed a call for a "code of conduct" to prevent clashes in the disputed territories. But it remains unclear if and when China will sit down with rival claimants to draft such a legally binding nonaggression pact.

The Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam are scheduled to meet Dec. 12 to discuss claims in the South China Sea and the role of China.

Star Trek classroom: Next generation of school desks

ScienceDaily (Nov. 22, 2012) ? Researchers designing and testing the 'classroom of the future' have found that multi-touch, multi-user desks can boost skills in mathematics.

New results from a 3-year project working with over 400 pupils, mostly 8-10 year olds, show that collaborative learning increases both fluency and flexibility in maths. It also shows that using an interactive 'smart' desk can have benefits over doing mathematics on paper.

Using multi-touch desks in the new classroom, the children were able to work together in new ways to solve and answer questions and problems using inventive solutions. Seeing what your friends are doing, and being able to fully participate in group activities, offers new ways of working in class, the researchers say.

The 'Star Trek classroom' could also help learning and teaching in other subjects.

The findings published in the journal Learning and Instruction, show that children who use a collaborative maths activity in the SynergyNet classroom improve in both mathematical flexibility and fluency, while children working on traditional paper-based activities only improve in flexibility.

During the project, the team found that 45% of students who used NumberNet increased in the number of unique mathematical expressions they created after using NumberNet, compared to 16% of students in the traditional paper-based activity.

Lead researcher, Professor Liz Burd, School of Education, said: "Our aim was to encourage far higher levels of active student engagement, where knowledge is obtained by sharing, problem-solving and creating, rather than by passive listening. This classroom enables both active engagement and equal access.

"We found our tables encouraged students to collaborate more effectively. We were delighted to observe groups of students enhancing others' understanding of mathematical concepts. Such collaboration just did not happen when students used paper-based approaches."

The Durham University team designed software and desks that recognize multiple touches on the desktop using vision systems that see infrared light. The project called SynergyNet set out to integrate a fully collaborative system of desks, building it into the fabric and furniture of the classroom. The new desks with a 'multi-touch' surface are the central component, and these are networked and linked to a main smartboard.

In terms of current teaching, the new system means that the 'move-to-use' whiteboard is by-passed and the new desks can be both screen and keyboard. The desks act like multi-touch whiteboards and several students can use any one desk at once.

The technology allows all students to take part as opposed to one individual dominating.

Researcher, Emma Mercier, School of Education, said: "Cooperative learning works very well in the new classroom because the pupils interact and learn in a different way. The children really enjoy doing maths in this way and are always disappointed when you turn the desks off!

"We can achieve fluency in maths through practice, however, boosting a pupil's ability to find a range of solutions to arithmetic questions is harder to teach. This classroom can help teachers to use collaborative learning to improve their pupils' flexibility in maths."

The teacher plays a key role in the classroom and can send tasks to different tables to individuals and groups. The teacher can also send one group's answers on to the next group to work on and add to, or to the board for a class discussion.

A live feed of the desks goes directly to the teacher who can intervene quickly to help an individual while allowing the group work to continue.

Professor Steve Higgins said: "Technology like this has enormous potential for teaching as it can help the teacher to manage and to orchestrate the learning of individuals and groups of learners to ensure they are both challenged and supported so that they can learn effectively."

Such a classroom may be some way off being a regular feature of schools across the world due to the costs in setting it up, and the level of support needed to make it work, however, in just 3 years the project team have noted major improvements in the technology, and a reduction in costs.

The researchers also recognise that task management in the class environment is an issue requiring thought and planning, but the overall potential of the new classroom for improved numeracy, learning, and on-going assessment is very good.

The project has worked with 12 different schools in the North East.

SynergyNet is one of eight technology enhanced learning research projects funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council as part of the ?12M Teaching and Learning Research Programme into Technology Enhanced Learning.

The project is an inter-disciplinary collaboration at Durham University between the School of Education, the Department of Psychology and the Department of Computer Science.

How to Become Recertified in Pet Loss Grief Counseling

How to Become Recertified in Pet Loss Grief Counseling

November 22nd, 2012 by admin

There are already a significant number of pet loss grief counselors in the United States. They have been certified to offer mental health and emotional support in a unique field. However, those with certification should be aware of the requirements to get recertified. Certification typically lasts three years. To be eligible to renew pet loss grief certification, the medical doctor, nurse or minister must have been actively practicing. In other words, it may be desirable to reapply several months before current certifications are due to lapse. The counselor must have been in practice for about 500 hours or more during the last two or three years. He or she should also have had 50 hours of continuing education. The standards for pet loss grief continuing education are somewhat tolerant and can include seminars and college courses. Publications in academic journals may meet up to half of the 50 hour requirement.

India hangs gunman from 2008 Mumbai attack

MUMBAI, India (AP) ? India executed the lone surviving gunman from the 2008 terror attack on Mumbai early Wednesday, the country's home ministry said.

Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, a Pakistani citizen, was one of 10 gunmen who rampaged through the streets of India's financial capital for three days in November 2008, killing 166 people.

Kasab was hung in secrecy at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at a jail in Pune, a city near Mumbai, after Indian President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his plea for mercy.

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said the home ministry sent Kasab's mercy plea to Mukherjee on October 16. Mukherjee rejected it on November 5, he said.

"It was decided then that on 21st November at 7:30 in the morning he would be hanged. That procedure has been completed today," Shinde said.

R.R. Patil, the home minister for the state of Maharashtra, where Mumbai is located, called the execution a tribute to "all innocent people and police officers who lost their lives in this heinous attack on our nation."

Indian authorities faced public pressure to quickly execute Kasab, and the government fast-tracked the appeal and execution process, which often can take years, or in some cases, decades.

Kasab and the other gunmen entered Mumbai by boat on November 26, 2008. Carrying mobile phones, grenades and automatic weapons, the gunmen fanned out across India's financial capital, targeting luxury hotels, a Jewish center and the city's main train station. The three-day attack was broadcast live on television, transfixing the nation and world.

Captured by a photographer striding through Mumbai's main train station, an assault rifle in hand, the baby-faced Kasab quickly became the iconic image of the siege.

India blames Laskhar e-Taiba, a militant Pakistani organization, for orchestrating the attacks. The incident inflamed relations between the nuclear armed neighbors.

An Indian judge sentenced Kasab to death in May 2010 for waging war against India, murder and terrorism, among other charges. Kasab cried that day as he heard the sentence.

Getting Teens Involved In the Holidays

Do you remember the excitement and wonder in your child?s eyes during the holidays when they were younger?? Do you remember how excited?your child was to help you bake cookies or decorate the home for the holidays?? Well, if you are the parent of a teen, like I am,?you may get the sense that they are only?excited about getting out of school and of course receiving gifts.??Many teens may act as if they don?t care if the house gets decorated or not or if the family gathers around the table for a nice meal,?so long as there is a iTunes card, a new gadget or cold hard cash given to them as a gift.? As adults, we know that there?are more important aspects to the holidays than receiving gifts and it is our job to help to pass that down to our children ? yes, even the big ones.??

Don?t despair ? believe it or not, while teens seem to be?totally preoccupied with their friends, their gadgets and their privacy ? most teens really are comforted by holiday traditions and?those traditions?become more important as they head into adulthood.?

Regardless of your religion, it is essential to express to your teen the value of the extra time they now can spend with their family and friends during the holidays. Why not help your teen look forward to the holidays?for reasons that aren?t related to gifts?? The best way to do this is to plan some activities that will encourage your teen?to get involved with the holidays and not hide out in their room on their computer or smart phone.??

Here are a few suggestions to get your teen involved in the holidays:

Have Them Help You Plan:? Don?t forget how cool your teen is.? Most teens are full of fun ideas that many adults just don?t think about.? Ask your teen if he or she has any ideas that they would like to see incorporated into the family holidays this year.? Just think of how happy they would be to know that they started a new?family tradition! ?If they don?t have any ideas off of the top of their head, encourage them to think of a few. For example: perhaps your teen is great at playing board games. Why not put them in charge of choosing a board game for the entire family to play together. What if your child loves to experiement in the kitchen???If so,?ask?your teen to prepare a new dish to unveil at the holiday dinner table or have them help you to create the holiday meal plan and then they can help you to shop for the food and also help to cook the meals. ?When teens are included in the holiday planning process, they tend to be more enthusiastic about the upcoming festivities.

Holiday Family Fun Night:? What teen doesn?t like to have fun??Put your teen in charge of planning a holiday fun night for the entire family. ?You can have your teen pick a day that works for everyone?during the holiday beak and then they can plan a fun day/evening that everyone will enjoy.? There are so many great activities that your teen can choose from: ice skating, movies, laser tag, or perhaps just going out to dinner.? Of course you will have to share with your teen what the budget is but this holiday fun night can be as extravant or as low key as you need it to be.?? Letting your teen choose the activity then having the entire family get together and have fun really does help your teen feel involved in the holidays.?

Teen Party Time: Don?t forget that your teen is growing into a young adult.? Perhaps you can let your teen have a small holiday party of their own at?the house with his or her friends!? It is your home so of course, you set all of the rules but just think of how happy your teen will be when you tell them that one of their holiday chores is to choose some friends to come over for a teen holiday party!? It doesn?t have to be something big at all ? it can be as simple as friends coming over to watch a movie, eat snacks and play a few games. ?This will allow your teen just a bit of independence in a fun way.

Charity Time:??Have your teen choose a local charity that they are passionate about and then plan an hour (or more) that you can go and volunteer as a family at the organization.? This is beautiful way to strengthen the family unit and it also just feels good!? The satisfaction and pride that comes from helping others is amazing!? Many high schools now require that students accumulate community service hours.? You can have your teen check with their school counselor or homeroom teacher to see if any volunteer efforts that they partake in can be considered?for the community services hours that they are required to collect.? When?teens?commit their?time and effort to an organization or a cause that they feel strongly about, they feel a large sense of pride.

While most adults are now?fully engaged in the ?planning? of the holidays, it is important to remember that holidays are meant to be shared with our family and friends and they are meant to be happy. While it may be necessary to change some of the aspects of famiy traditions as our children grow, making sure that our teens are involved in the holidays is very important.

Question:? What are some of the holiday traditions that your children/teens enjoy?

San Francisco lawmakers vote to ban public nudity

In response to complaints from constituents, San Francisco lawmakers voted to ban public nakedness. Opponents to the measure cite concerns about freedom of expression. Another vote and the mayor's signature are needed before the new law could take effect. ?

San Francisco lawmakers disappointed committed nudists Tuesday by narrowly approving a ban on public nakedness despite concerns the measure would undermine the city's reputation as a sanctuary for free expression.

The Board of Supervisors voted 6-5 in favor of a public safety ordinance that prohibits exposed genitals in most public places, including streets, sidewalks and public transit. The law still must pass a final vote and secure Mayor Edwin Lee's signature to take effect early next year.

Supervisor Scott Wiener introduced the ban in response to escalating complaints about a group of men whose bare bodies are on display almost daily in the city's predominantly gay Castro District.

"The Castro, and San Francisco in general, is a place of freedom, expression and acceptance. But freedom, expression and acceptance does not mean anything goes under any circumstances," Wiener said Tuesday. "Our public spaces are for everyone, and as a result it's appropriate to have some minimal standards of behavior."

Wiener's opponents on the board said a citywide ban was unnecessary and would draw police officers' attention away from bigger problems while undermining San Francisco values like tolerance and appreciation for the offbeat.

"I'm concerned about civil liberties, about free speech, about changing San Francisco's style and how we are as a city," Supervisor John Avalos said. "I cannot and will not bite this apple and I refuse to put on this fig leaf."

To make his point, Avalos showed his colleagues a clip from the 1970 movie version of Joseph Heller's "Catch-22." In it, Orson Welles pins a medal on a naked soldier.

"I get emails all the time about people who are upset there are homeless people, and I would be the last person to legislate a solution for people who do not want homeless people in their neighborhood," Supervisor Christina Olague said.

Wiener countered that it was inappropriate for hard-core nudists to wrap themselves in the mantle of personal liberty.

Under Wiener's proposal, a first offense would carry a maximum penalty of a $100 fine, but prosecutors would have authority to charge a third violation as a misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 fine and a year in jail.

Exemptions would be made for participants at permitted street fairs and parades, such as the city's annual gay pride event and the Bay-to-Breakers street run, which often draws participants in costumes or various states of undress.

A federal lawsuit claiming the ban would violate the free speech rights of people who prefer to make a statement by going au naturel was filed last week in case the ordinance clears its final hurdles.

US seeks ?durable outcome? in Gaza truce talks, Clinton says in Israel

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has undertaken the difficult task of helping to shepherd a possible ceasefire. Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi, meanwhile, is playing a key role as an intermediary with Hamas, a group labeled by the U.S. as a terrorist organization. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 4:50 p.m. ET: Following her arrival in Israel, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reiterated at a press conference Tuesday that America's commitment to Israel's security is "rock solid," adding that "the goal must be a durable outcome that promotes regional stability and advances the security and legitimate aspirations of Israelis and Palestinians alike."

"The rocket attacks from terrorist organizations inside Gaza on Israeli cities and towns must end, and a broader calm restored," Clinton said, adding that there are no substitutes for security and a just and lasting peace.

Speaking in Jerusalem, Clinton also offered her condolences for those lost in the violence.

"Our hearts break for the loss of every civilian, Israeli and Palestinian, and for all those who have been wounded and are living in fear and danger," she said, adding that she would work with Israel and Egypt on brokering a truce in Gaza "in the days ahead."

Israel is prepared to escalate its offensive but would prefer a long-term diplomatic solution, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday.

"If there is a possibility of achieving a long-term solution to this problem with diplomatic means, we prefer that," he said in a public statement alongside Clinton.

"But if not, I'm sure you understand that Israel will have to take whatever action is necessary to defend its people."

Earlier, a Hamas official said a truce with Israel would not be reached Tuesday because the Israeli government had yet to respond to proposals.

"The Israeli side has not responded yet, so we will not hold a (news) conference this evening and must wait until tomorrow," Ezzat al-Rishq, a senior Hamas leader, told Reuters. "The truce is now held up because we are waiting for the Israeli side to respond," he added in a short telephone interview.

A flurry of violence hit Gaza Tuesday as Israel bombed a Gaza bank and targeted the homes of militants. Hamas responded with more than 100 rockets. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Clinton landed at 9:51 p.m. local time in Tel Aviv, where she met with Netanyahu. Later, Clinton will meet with the President of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah before heading to Cairo.

A U.S. official stressed to NBC News that Clinton would not meet with representatives of Hamas, the Islamist organization that controls the Gaza Strip, largely because of its failure to renounce terrorism and recognize Israel's right to exist.

Egyptian officials said talks are ongoing to reach a truce in Gaza, although any agreement appears unlikely to address the long-term areas of disagreement between Israel and the Hamas leaders of the Gaza Strip, NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reported Tuesday.

The expected "cessation of hostilities" will call on all parties to use maximum restraint, according to one former intelligence official familiar with the talks.

Earlier Tuesday, President Barack Obama spoke to Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, who is seeking to broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.?

According to White House officials, Obama spoke to Morsi for the third time in 24 hours. Deputy National Security adviser Ben Rhodes said Obama wanted to talk to Morsi before Clinton's arrival in Israel.

Rhodes said Obama underscored the importance of Morsi working toward a de-escalation to the conflict in Gaza. He also commended Morsi's efforts to pursue a de-escalation and acknowledged Egypt's important role in the region's security.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is attempting to bring about a ceasefire, or to prevent Israel from invading Gaza while convincing Egypt's president to pressure Hamas to stop firing rockets. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Rhodes said Obama emphasized the importance of a diplomatic solution, but said that rocket fire from Gaza into Israel must stop.

Israel Defense Forces continued airstrikes overnight, and also said 39 rockets fired from Gaza hit Israel Tuesday in a message on its Twitter account.

Since Israel launched its military campaign seven days ago in response to rocket fire, more than 100 people in Gaza and three people in Israel have been killed.

Internationally, the main focus was on stopping the violence, and Morsi hinted at a possible breakthrough Tuesday.

Speaking at his sister's funeral in Egypt, Morsi?said the "aggression on Gaza" would end Tuesday.?He?made the apparently off-the-cuff comments in front of mourners who had come to pay their respects, but did not elaborate. Several journalists traveling with Morsi confirmed he made the remark.

'Army must invade': In southern Israel, support grows for action in Gaza

In Jerusalem, Netanyahu said Israel would be a ?willing partner? in a cease-fire, but also issued a warning.

He said if further military action proved necessary ?to stop the constant barrage of rockets, Israel will not hesitate to do what is necessary to defend our people.?

And Mohammed Deif, the new leader of Hamas' military wing, sounded a defiant note, saying that the movement was ready to fight and would not back down from its efforts to liberate Palestine.

He was speaking in his first audio recording since the group?s previous top military commander, Ahmed Jabari, was killed in an Israeli airstrike Wednesday. Deif, who has survived several assassination attempts in the past, called for Hamas? supporters to remain steadfast.?

'Difficult' situation

It is unclear how much influence Clinton can have on the situation.

?She is going to go out there to be in the region to have direct, face-to-face discussions with those leaders,? Rhodes said. ?I don?t want to predict exactly what the outcome of those discussions will be. We all know how difficult this situation is.??

The White House thinks the leaders who are heavily involved in the region ?understand what the best outcome is,? Rhodes added, but that a peaceful goal is only achievable ?if Hamas takes action to stop what they?ve been doing.?

An Israeli soldier and a civilian died when rockets exploded near the Gaza frontier, police and the army said.

An Israeli air strike on two cars in the Gaza Strip killed six Palestinians Tuesday, while two children died in an attack in the north of the territory, local residents and medics told Reuters.?

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called Tuesday for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and said a threatened Israeli ground operation in the Palestinian enclave would be a ?dangerous escalation? that must be avoided.

Later, standing alongside Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Ban urged Israel to show "maximum restraint" and condemned rocket attacks on Israel.

Also Tuesday, Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby?and the foreign ministers of Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, Tunisia and Sudan traveled from Egypt to Gaza in an unprecedented move designed to show solidarity with the Palestinians, NBC News reported.

US Embassy guard wounded
Meanwhile, a man was arrested after he stabbed a security guard Tuesday at the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, a police spokesman told Reuters.?

The spokesman said the guard opened fire during the attack.

Israel Radio said the attacker, who police said was armed with a knife and an ax, was wounded.?

' Tis the season: Retail rush under way | The Business Times

Article date: Nov 20 2012

Many downtown Grand Junction merchants have installed window displays to add to the holiday atmosphere. One of the most elaborate displays can be found at Unique Expressions on Main Street. (Business Times photo by Phil Castle)

Phil Castle, The Business Times

Holiday shoppers eager to bag Black Friday bargains will find an accommodating venue at the Mesa Mall in Grand Junction.

Most of the merchants at the mall are scheduled to open at the stroke of midnight on Nov. 23. But Black Friday starts on a Thursday this year when Sears opens at 8 p.m. and Target opens at 9 p.m. Nov. 22.

The early launch is just one of factors that encourage Chelsi Reimer to predict to a strong holiday shopping season. Equally encouraging is the fact all of the more than 100 spaces at the mall have been leased, says Reimer, director of marketing and business development there. ?We feel real positive.?

Meanwhile, in downtown Grand Junction, merchants there expect a series of events as well as the ambiance of a business district decked out for the holidays to attract shoppers as well.

?Everybody just seems real upbeat,? says Kathy Dirks, marketing and communications director for the Downtown Partnership.

Diane Schwenke, president and chief executive director of the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce, expects holiday sales to increase, but economic and labor conditions to hamper a more robust shopping season. ?There?ll be a little bit of an uptick, but not huge,? she predicts.

At the same time, though, Grand Junction remains a regional retail hub for Western Colorado and Eastern Utah.

And that?s a tide of holiday shoppers that continues to lift all boats, Schwenke adds. ?That is a big, big deal.?

From a national perspective, the outlook for the holiday shopping season is mostly upbeat. The National Retail Federation forecasts a 4.1 percent increase in overall holiday sales, while Shop.org projects a 12 percent gain in online holiday sales.

The latest measure of consumer confidence climbed to its highest level of the year on more optimistic assessments of business and labor conditions.

The Conference Board, the same business research and membership group that tracks consumer confidence, also surveys consumers about their holiday shopping plans. According to the latest results of that annual survey, U.S. households will spend an average of $521 on gifts this holiday season. Nearly

10 percent of consumers responding to the survey said they plan to spend more on gifts this year, up from 7 percent last year.

?As the holiday approaches, consumers appear to be in better spirits than last year,? says Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators for the Conference Board. ?Our survey results show a slight boost in holiday spending intentions. Retailers are cautiously optimistic that this holiday shopping season will be better than last.?

At the Mesa Mall, Reimer says shoppers and retailers alike are anxious for that season to begin in earnest. The mall has been fielding calls for weeks from shoppers wondering when stores will open for Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving that marks the traditional start of the season, Reimer says. ?We?re already getting a lot of buzz.?

While Sears and Target both will open late on Thanksgiving night, most of the stores in the mall will open at midnight, Reimer says.

To further accommodate shoppers, the mall also will open what?s called a rejuvenation station with a large seating area and free energy drinks and massages, Reimer says. Special giveaways of merchandise, coupons and gift cards are planned for 4 and 6 a.m. on Black Friday.

Several new stores have opened at the mall in time for the holiday shopping season, Reimer says, among them the Crazy 8 and Turbo clothing stores and Cool N Fun toy store. That?s not to mention the stores and kiosks that open just for holidays.

In downtown Grand Junction, a number of merchants are joining in Small Business Saturday, Dirks says. The national initiative kicks off the holiday shopping season for independent retailers and restaurateurs on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

A series of holiday celebrations already has begun with the lighting of a large Christmas tree near Fourth and Main streets.

The Parade of Lights is set for 5 p.m. Dec. 1. More than 100 entries are expected for one of the largest parade of the year in Western Colorado, Dirks says. Still other events include the Spirit of Christmas Walk set for 5:30 to 9 p.m. Dec. 7.

Free carriage rides, the appearance of Santa and Mrs. Claus and holiday music are scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays from Nov. 24 through Dec. 23, she says.

The City of Grand Junction offers free parking downtown between Nov. 22 and Jan. 1, covering meters with red plastic bags that read ?season?s greetings.?

In addition to the Christmas tree, holiday lighting has been installed along Main Street in downtown Grand Junction. And many merchants feature holiday displays in their windows.

The events and decorations are all part of an effort to create an atmosphere that brings holiday shoppers downtown and into the more than 130 stores and restaurants in the business district, Dirks says. ?We want the downtown area to be a destination for the holidays.?

Schwenke says the mall, downtown and Grand Valley remain a destination for holiday shoppers from around the region. That?s important because retailers can count on a customer base not only of residents, but also visitors from a large chunk of Western Colorado and Eastern Utah.

Reimer says Mesa Mall advertises throughout the region to take build awareness and draw in shoppers from West Slope communities. ?We?re doing our best to get the word out.?

Google amends Android SDK to Tackle Fragmentation Issues

Fragmentation is perhaps the most precarious and repugnant problems Android platform faces. The issue not only frustrates the developers, but the users are also pretty irked by the multiple flavours of Android.

In an attempt to stop the fraudulent fragmentation issues, Google has modified its legal agreement with developers, which now includes an anti-fragmentation clause. The developers who wish to put their apps on Play Store have to compulsorily agree to the modified terms and conditions.

This is what Section 3.4 of Google?s new terms for developers reads:

?You agree that you will not take any actions that may cause or result in the fragmentation of Android, including but not limited to distributing, participating in the creation of, or promoting in any way a software development kit derived from the SDK.?

This is the first time Google has modified it?s terms since 2009. Previously, there was no written clause which asserted anything about anti-fragmentation.

Though the move is not sufficient, it certainly kicks off Google?s anti-fragmentation campaign. Google already knows how fragmentation creates mayhem, for both- users and developers. Due to fragmentation, developers are not able to create universal, bug-free apps. Also, it becomes more costly to develop and test apps, as multiple versions of Android require different coding standards. Moreover, the app needs to be tested on a number of devices, which adds to the testing expenses.

By giving out OTA updates, handset makers and wireless carriers can work together to assure that everyone is running a uniform version of Android. Of course, it?s impossible to port the latest versions of Android to older devices due to hardware constraints, but attempts can be made to reach to a uniform platform. According to Google?s statistics, more than 54% of Android devices run Android 2.3, which was released almost 2 years ago.

Though Google has released lots of scoops of different flavours till now, but to make things sweeter and better, it?s better now to make it a Sundae. And this is perhaps the first step towards that!

International Emmys honor Lear, Alda, South American shows

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Television legend Norman Lear and veteran actor Alan Alda received special honors at the International Emmy Awards on Monday, while programming from South America dominated the competition, with Argentina and Brazil each winning two Emmys.

Lear, best known as creator of the ground-breaking 1970s hit comedy "All in the Family," which premiered during a time of social upheaval and tackled issues such as race and women's rights, said "the world will, and needs to, come together through the arts" as he accepted the honor.

The producer and writer received a special 40th anniversary Founders Award from the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, as did Alda, star of the long-running Korean-war set comedy, M*A*S*H* about doctors on the front lines.

Alda paid tribute to "the men and women in the hospital tents," referring to real-life medical personnel who struggle to treat war injured, who he noted usually go unmentioned at award shows.

"Glee" creator Ryan Murphy received the annual International Founders Award, which was presented by Oscar-winner Jessica Lange, a star of his current series "American Horror Story."

Argentina won both acting categories, with honors going to actress Cristina Banegas for the dramatic series "Television x La Inclusion," in which she plays the mother of an ailing child waging battle with health insurers; while Dario Grandinetti picked up the best actor award for his performance as a racist taxi driver in the same series.

It marked the first time both honors were won by actors from the same program.

Brazil scored wins for comedy series for "The Invisible Woman," while "The Illusionist" was named outstanding telenovela.

In bestowing its prizes, the Emmys, which honor television produced outside the United States, extended their reach after years of domination and even sweeps by the United Kingdom, which this year won two, for best TV movie or miniseries "Black Mirror" and best documentary "Terry Pratchett: Choosing to Die."

France, Germany and Australia each won one Emmy.

France took the best drama series prize for "Braquo season 2," while Germany's "Song of War" won for outstanding arts programming. The Australian franchise of the adventure competition "The Amazing Race" won the award for non-scripted, or reality, television.

The International Emmy directorate award went to Korean Broadcasting System president and CEO Dr. Kim In-Kyu.

Presenters at the ceremony, hosted by recently retired talk show host Regis Philbin, also included Victor Garber, Donnie Wahlberg, Cheyenne Jackson, Telenovela actress Edith Gonz?lez, German TV personalities Joko and Klaas and Indian actress Prerna Wanvari.

The Engadget Interview Thorsten Heins on BlackBerry 10, QWERTY keyboards and the changing culture at RIM video

January 30th, 2013 marks the beginning of a new era for RIM. It will put to rest those doubters who questioned whether the company could survive long enough to complete its painful transition away from BlackBerries past and onto BlackBerry 10. The question then becomes what the market will do with this wholly new OS -- whether RIM can be more successful at regaining its former smartphone stature than Microsoft has thus far proven to be with its own mobile OS reboot. If there's one person who has put more thought into that situation than any other its RIM President and CEO Thorsten Heins, a man who will be celebrating something else in January: his first anniversary at the top. How has culture changed at RIM over that year and what can we expect from the company in the weeks and months to come? Answers to those questions and more in our full interview below.

Digistore 4GB Spy Pen Camera Discreetly Captures Photos and Video

Digistore 4GB Spy Pen Camera Discreetly Captures Photos and VideoWant to spy on your friends or family? Your coworkers? Your dog? Here's a cheap camera disguised as a pen so all you have to do is press a button and let the recording begin.

Whether you have a legitimate (and legal) reason to secretly record something or you're just doing it for fun, Digistore's pen camera is a cheap and effective way to do it. Most pen cameras offer fairly low quality recordings and photos, and we haven't seen an expensive pen that does much better than this little cheap one. It is not a phenomenal implement by any stretch of the imagination, but it records decent video and images in standard definition and looks like your average, thicker pen. It'll work on both Windows and OS X, just like a flash drive. Operating the camera take a bit of work, however, and you'll need to read the instructions carefully. Despite these drawbacks, it's a pretty awesome spy gadget for under $20.
